Hidden Gems & Must-See Spots in East Tennessee
East Tennessee is seriously underrated when it comes to travel. I’ve absolutely fallen in love with the mountains in the 7 years since I’ve moved out this way. It has everything needed to find yourself again. Whether you’re chasing waterfalls, vintage vibes, or cozy mountain towns, this corner of the South has it all. Here’s a little travel inspo from my latest weekend adventures that gave my soul a full reset. Fill your gas tank and enjoy life.
1. Max Patch (near Hot Springs) Max Patch
A short hike, 360° mountain views, wildflowers, and that “main character in a movie” kind of breeze. It’s perfect for a sunrise picnic or golden hour photos. Bonus download the app AllTrails to map the perfect hike.
2. Jonesborough – Tennessee’s Oldest Town
Think cobblestone streets, antique shops, homemade pies, and Southern charm that feels like a Hallmark movie. The storytelling festival here is magical. Mark your calendars for October!!
3. Watauga Lake Watauga Lake
Tucked between the mountains, this place is peaceful, uncrowded, and absolutely stunning. Rent a pontoon, pack lunch, and just float the day away. Pure bliss. I definitely recommend renting a cabin on the lake. We found it fairly reasonably for about $100 a night. We paid around $240 for a pontoon rental. If the boat rental is out of your budget, just sitting on the deck at your cabin is absolutely gorgeous as well!
4. Roan Mountain Roan Mountain
In summer, it’s covered in flame azaleas and rhododendrons. In fall, the colors are unreal. Great trails, cabins, and picnic spots — it’s like the Smokies’ quieter cousin. I also suggest the app AllTrails for this location as well. There are easy to moderate areas and it helps you know where you’re going before you get there.
Bonus tip: So many of these places are dog-friendly and picnic-perfect. Pack a basket, grab your favorite person (or pup), and go get that mountain magic.
