A Tour Of My Coffee Art 💛😃☕️🖌️

If you’re a coffee and art lover have you tried making art with coffee? —These are two of my favorite things to do together…paint with coffee and drink coffee. 😃👏🏼☕️The art of painting with coffee is known as arfé, which is a combination of the words art and café. Coffee painting is so easy and inexpensive to do. My favorite part is being enveloped by the amazing aroma while I work on my coffee masterpiece!

You can create anything from coffee like landscapes, people, animals or wherever your imagination takes you. 💛😃 Coffee is an amazing medium to work with and it’s like working with watercolor.

Here is a list of supplies you will need for coffee painting:

1. Quality watercolor paper

2. Pencil for outlining work

3. Variety of brushes depending on what you are planning to make

4. Towels for spills/rags

5. Masking Tape

6. Scrap paper

7. Instant Coffee works perfectly for coffee painting because it dissolves faster so it’s easier

Next step is to make your coffee paint which is so easy. Mix the coffee with water and you will want to mix several different concentrations of coffee to water to make a selection of both lighter and darker hues. I use small cups, like Expresso cups to mix my different coffee hues.

Here are my ratios. You can adjust to fit your needs.

Lighter Hue Mix

1 TB coffee 2 TB water

Medium Hue Mix

2 TB coffee 1 TB water

Dark Hue Mix

3 TB coffee 1 TB water

If you need ideas for painting with coffee check on Instagram or other Social Media apps to get inspiration and ideas. Happy coffee painting! ☕️😃💛

... Read moreI totally get it – there's something magical about turning your morning brew into a beautiful piece of art. When I first started coffee painting, I was honestly surprised by how forgiving and versatile it is! If you're looking for even more ways to dive into this aromatic hobby, or just need a little extra nudge to get started, I've got some personal tips and ideas for you. First off, let's talk about making those coffee hues truly sing. While the ratios mentioned are a fantastic starting point, I've found that consistency is key. Sometimes I'll make a slightly thicker "dark hue" mix to use almost like an ink for outlines or strong shadows, and a super watery "light hue" for broad washes. Don't be afraid to experiment with adding just a tiny bit more instant coffee or water until it feels right on your brush – it's all part of the fun! Now, for actual painting ideas. If you're wondering what to create, the possibilities are endless! I love trying portraits because coffee's natural warm tones are perfect for capturing different skin shades. I've experimented with painting all kinds of faces – from those with striking blonde hair to rich, dark skin tones, and even playful curly hair. Adding little details like freckles or glasses with a fine brush or pen after the coffee dries can bring so much character to your coffee art. And speaking of animals, I once tried a simple giraffe outline, building up its spots with layered washes, and it turned out surprisingly charming! You can also try simple still-life subjects like a pile of coffee beans for a meta touch, or create beautiful sunset nature scenes by layering your lighter washes and gradually adding darker tones as you go. For beginners, I always suggest starting with an 'easy coffee art drawing.' Try sketching a simple object or an abstract shape with your pencil first. Then, use a very diluted coffee wash to block in the lightest areas. Let each layer dry completely before adding the next, gradually building up your darker tones. This layering technique is exactly like working with watercolors and gives your art incredible depth. Don't shy away from adding texture either! I've had fun with coffee splatters for an abstract background or to give a sense of movement. Another thing I've learned is that coffee art doesn't have to be purely coffee. You can mix mediums! After my coffee layers are fully dry, I sometimes go in with a fine black pen for crisp outlines or to add tiny details. I've even seen artists add a touch of white gouache for highlights, or a sprinkle of glitter for a bit of sparkle, especially on portraits. It truly makes your piece unique. And lastly, don't forget to enjoy the process and that amazing aroma! It's such a relaxing and sensory experience. If you find your paint is too weak, just add more coffee. If it's too strong and staining your paper too quickly, dilute it a little more. There are no strict rules, just endless creative possibilities with your humble cup of coffee.
