My bf is stingy and it’s hurting our relationship

Little background about our relationship, we have been together for 2 years and met during our college years. Now we both have full time jobs and make a decent amount of money that can afford a comfortable living situation. I love him so much because we get along so well. We have so many things in common and our communication skills with each other are amazing except for one thing he is super cheap. He makes over 80k a year but we have not went on a date for over a year. We can’t never even get simple things like coffee or ice cream or anything for that matter. He wasn’t always like this, for the first two years of our relationship we used to go all the time and it was never a problem. He also does not want to move out with me and still shares a room in his parents apartment with his brother (please tell me this is not okay?).

... Read moreIn a relationship, financial attitudes can significantly shape the dynamics between partners. When one person is perceived as stingy, it can lead to feelings of frustration, imbalance, and dissatisfaction. This situation often escalates when the couple has established a comfortable lifestyle but one partner holds back on spending, leading to an absence of shared experiences like dates or casual outings. It's essential to discuss financial habits openly to avoid misunderstandings. Questions like 'Is my boyfriend really stingy or am I too materialistic?' often arise, highlighting the necessity of self-reflection in these discussions. Are expectations realistic? Does the stingy behavior stem from financial insecurity, personal beliefs, or simply a lack of understanding about relationship investment? Communication is vital here. Engaging in honest conversations about money and spending habits can foster understanding and empathy. If one partner feels unvalued due to the other's financial choices, it could lead to resentment. Evaluating shared financial goals, planning experiences together, and agreeing on a budget for outings can reinforce partnership and shared responsibility. Additionally, it’s important to consider long-term compatibility. Factors such as living situations can reflect deeper values surrounding financial management and stability. If a partner is comfortable residing with family while maintaining a secure job, discussions about future living arrangements and financial independence become crucial. Balancing personal values with collective goals will dictate the health of your relationship moving forward. Relationships thrive when both partners feel valued and understood, and that includes financial aspects. Addressing stinginess early can prevent larger issues down the road, ensuring a healthier, more equitable partnership.

I would say to definitely have a sit down chat with him. Ask him straight up what you’ve noticed and then hear his perspective… is he saving for something? Does he feel too overworked to think of date nights? If he is dismissive/avoidant about it, that may be a red flag you need to address further.
