bad advice saturday: procrastination edition

2 days agoEdited to

... Read moreProcrastination when it comes to important conversations is something many of us experience but rarely admit. From personal experience, I've noticed that waiting for the other person to initiate a difficult talk often prolongs misunderstandings and tension. While it might seem easier to avoid conflict by saying "I'll wait for them to bring it up," this approach can lead to missed chances for connection and growth. In many relationships, whether romantic, familial, or professional, delaying important discussions can amplify stress. I've found that addressing issues early, even if uncomfortable, helps build trust and mutual respect. It’s true that "important conversations love procrastination" — they tend to grow bigger and more daunting the longer you wait. To make these conversations less intimidating, I suggest setting small, manageable intentions. For example, starting with acknowledging your feelings or asking open-ended questions can reduce pressure. Sharing how you feel in a calm, honest way often encourages the other person to open up, too. Humor is also a great way to ease into tough talks. The #badadvicesaturday series highlights the irony in how we avoid conversations, reminding us not to take ourselves too seriously while still valuing communication. So next time you catch yourself waiting, consider flipping the script and taking initiative — it might feel bad advice at first, but the results can be surprisingly positive. Remember, no judgment if you're still waiting or if you've finally had the talk. Every step towards communication counts, and sometimes procrastination is just the start of figuring out how to engage more openly.
