Crochet Rocky from Project Hail Mary

2025/6/22 Edited to

... Read moreAs a huge fan of Andy Weir's 'Project Hail Mary,' I knew I had to bring Rocky, our favorite Astrophage-specialist alien, to life in my own way! Crocheting him was such a fun and rewarding project, and I'm so excited to share my journey and some tips so you can make your very own Rocky plush, just like the 'crocheted Rocky' you see here! First things first, choosing your materials is key. For Rocky, I opted for a soft, medium-weight acrylic yarn in a warm, earthy tone – something that felt a bit alien but also cuddly. You'll also need a crochet hook appropriate for your yarn (I used a 3.5mm hook for a tight, amigurumi-style fabric), safety eyes (I chose bright green ones to give him that curious, intelligent look), polyester fiberfill for stuffing, a yarn needle for assembly, and some stitch markers. Don't forget a pair of sharp scissors! If you're new to amigurumi, don't worry! Rocky is a great project to practice basic stitches. You'll primarily be using single crochet (sc), increasing (inc) to make parts wider, and decreasing (dec) to shape them. Mastering the magic ring is also super helpful for starting your pieces neatly without a hole. There are tons of free tutorials online if you need a refresher on these foundational techniques. When it came to actually crocheting Rocky, I broke him down into several manageable parts. I started with his main body, working in continuous rounds to create a seamless sphere-like shape. His head was a similar process, slightly smaller. The real fun came with his unique appendages! I crocheted multiple thin 'arms' or tentacle-like structures, each tapering slightly. For his 'eyes,' I opted for small, flat crocheted circles before attaching the safety eyes for added dimension. This is where you can really let your creativity shine – thinking about how you 'envisioned him' while reading the book. The assembly part can sometimes feel a bit daunting, but it's where your Rocky truly comes together! I carefully pinned all the crocheted pieces to the main body before sewing them on with my yarn needle. This allowed me to adjust the positioning until I was happy with his overall look. Don't be afraid to stuff your pieces firmly as you go, especially the body and head, to give him a good, sturdy shape that will hold up to lots of hugs. For the smaller appendages, a little stuffing helps them keep their form without being too rigid. Adding the final details truly brings Rocky to life. I used a thin strand of black embroidery floss to give him a subtle smile, reflecting his friendly and curious nature. And those 'Jazz hands'? While Rocky doesn't literally have hands, I thought about how to convey his expressive nature. You could subtly shape his appendages to suggest movement, or even use tiny wire inserts (carefully secured!) if you want posable limbs, though I kept mine soft for a cuddly plush. This is where your 'Project Hail Mary Rocky plush' really gets its personality! For those looking for a specific 'rocky project hail mary crochet pattern,' I highly recommend searching Ravelry or Etsy. Many talented designers have created their own interpretations, and a good pattern can guide you through stitch counts and shaping. If you can't find an exact match, don't hesitate to adapt an existing alien or octopus amigurumi pattern – that's often how I get started! Just remember to adjust colors and proportions to match our beloved Eridian. Making this 'rocky stuffed animal project hail mary' was a labor of love, and every time I look at him, I'm reminded of the incredible adventure in the book. I hope this inspires you to pick up your hook and create your own Astrophage-specialist alien friend. What do you think? Is this how you envisioned him? Share your crocheted Rocky creations!
