Perimenopause and your scalp/hair

I was shocked at how much my hair changed in my late 30s. I thought menopause was something I didn't need to think about until much later. But turns out the period before menopause,

PERImenopause, involves a lot of hormonal changes as well. These can affect your hair and skin (and everything else). I did a deep dive into the science to find out what's going on and wrote a guide with everything I've found. #perimenopause #scalpcare #hairtok #aginggracefully #hairproductsyouneed

... Read moreExperiencing hair and scalp changes during perimenopause can feel both confusing and frustrating, especially when symptoms like increased frizz, scalp dryness, and unpredictable hair texture emerge seemingly overnight. From my own experience in my late 30s and early 40s, understanding that these changes are tied to fluctuating estrogen levels was a critical eye-opener. Hair follicles are highly sensitive to hormones, and during perimenopause, the drop and rise in estrogen can alter hair growth cycles and the quality of hair produced. This means you might notice slower growth, more shedding, or the appearance of ‘weird hairs’ that behave differently than before. One practical adjustment that helped me was shifting my hair care routine towards hydration and protection. Using leave-in conditioners and deep conditioning treatments specifically aimed at retaining moisture minimizes dryness and frizz. Incorporating scalp serums also proved beneficial to improve scalp hydration and promote a healthier environment for hair growth. Additionally, choosing styling products with strong hold but lightweight formulas helped manage unruly, meandering hairs without weighing down delicate strands. I also found that targeting hair concerns on specific scalp regions—often the frontal area, which can be more affected during this period—made a difference in maintaining overall hair appearance and density. It’s important to check for underlying health issues like thyroid problems or nutritional deficiencies, but if those are ruled out, focusing on hormonal influence and scalp health is key. Being informed about perimenopause and its impact on hair allows you to approach hair care decisions thoughtfully, using products and routines aligned with your changing scalp needs. Patience and consistency with scalp care, hydration, and protection can transform the way your hair responds to hormonal shifts, helping you age gracefully while embracing these natural changes.
