Murals of Cartagena

Don't visit Cartagena and miss the colorful and vibrant neighborhood of Getsemani.

Only a 10 minute walk from the walled city, Getsemani is known for its colorful houses, street food, performance art, galleries and cafes. But the best part is simply wandering aimlessly street after street and taking in the murals, graffiti and street art. (One of the streets has nothing but unique angel wings painted on the walls through the entire street for you to take photos with!).

Getsemani
2024/4/25 Edited to

... Read moreYou know, one of the things that truly made my Cartagena trip unforgettable was diving deep into Getsemani's street art scene. While the main article just scratches the surface, I wanted to share a bit more about what makes this neighborhood an absolute treasure for art lovers and wanderers like me. First off, don't just rush through. Give yourself at least a few hours, or even a full afternoon, to truly soak it all in. I found that the best time to explore is early morning to avoid the heat and crowds, or late afternoon when the light is just perfect for photos and the street performers start to emerge. The murals here aren't just pretty pictures; they tell stories. Many of them reflect Colombia's rich history, Afro-Caribbean heritage, and social commentary. You'll see powerful portraits of local heroes, vibrant scenes of daily life, and abstract pieces that make you pause and think. Look out for the incredible detail in pieces like the toucan mural I spotted, or the majestic lion with those piercing green eyes. It’s not just about famous artists; it’s about the community expressing itself on every wall. I even saw some signed by local talents, like the one by '@artes Palencia' – it’s amazing to connect with the artists this way. And let's talk about those iconic elements! The colorful umbrellas strung across the streets, especially prominent in areas like *Calle de la Sierpe*, create such a whimsical canopy. They're not just for shade; they add to the entire festive atmosphere. And yes, that street with the angel wings is real and it's a must-visit for that perfect Instagram moment! I spent ages trying to find the best angle, and it was so much fun seeing everyone else getting creative with their poses. Beyond the well-known spots, I highly recommend peeking into courtyards and alleyways. That's where I often found some of the most unique and less-photographed pieces, hidden gems that felt like my own personal discovery. The way the street art blends with the brightly painted houses and balconies, often adorned with overflowing plants, just creates this cohesive, living gallery. It's a symphony of color and culture where every building seems to have its own personality. If you're feeling adventurous, try finding a local guide who specializes in street art tours. They can share insights into the meanings behind the murals and introduce you to the artists. But honestly, part of the charm is just letting yourself get lost. Grab a fresh fruit juice from a street vendor, listen to the salsa music drifting from a cafe, and just let your eyes feast on the beauty around you. Getsemani isn't just a place to visit; it’s an experience that truly ignites your senses and leaves you with a deeper appreciation for Cartagena's artistic soul. Don't miss it!
