Elephant Sanctuaries in Thailand

You all know I love my animal encounters! This was such a special experience in Thailand.🐘

Some important info:

Riding elephants is inhumane and can cause physical and emotional damage. Elephants are extremely intelligent and sensitive creatures who deserve our respect and protection.

Riding elephants often involves a brutal process called "phajaan" where they are subjected to physical and psychological torment in order to break their spirit. Separated from their mothers at a young age, they endure beatings, starvation, and confinement in order to  make them submissive for human entertainment.

Elephants are not built to carry the weight of humans on their backs. The sheer pressure exerted by riders and heavy saddles can cause long-term damage to their spines and overall health. Additionally, these conditions and repetitive work can lead to chronic stress, depression, and premature death.

There are several humane elephant rescues located on Koh Samui.  We visited Samui Elephant Sanctuary, where we got to meet and feed Grandma and Kaew Ta, both rescues from the logging industry.  Kaew Ta is blind in one eye, the result of a hook to the eye for failing to follow a command.  Grandma had her baby taken from her and cried for two years.  Both elephants are so gentle and sweet, and their scars and trauma broke my heart.  Elephants are known for their excellent memories; therefore, it is requested you only touch them on their trunks, because if you touch their scars, it brings back the trauma of the abuse they suffered in the past.💔

Samui Elephant Sanctuary offers a safe and caring environment where adult elephants can retire peacefully and lovingly.  You can feed them, pet them and observe their natural behaviors, all while learning from the knowledgeable and caring staff.  This was truly a touching and magical experience, getting to interact with these special gentle giants.

It is our responsibility to be conscientious travelers and support ethical tourism. Please always do your research and choose to visit responsible sanctuaries.

... Read moreMy recent experience at Samui Elephant Sanctuary really opened my eyes, and I wanted to share some more tips for anyone planning to visit these incredible creatures in Thailand. While I focused on Koh Samui, I know many of you might be looking for ethical encounters in other parts of Thailand, like Chiang Mai or Phuket, where places like 'Elephant Jungle Sanctuary Bangtao' or 'Kanta Sanctuary' are often searched for. It’s so important to do your research, because not all places calling themselves a ‘sanctuary’ are truly ethical. First off, the golden rule: no riding, ever. If a place offers elephant rides, even bareback, it’s a huge red flag. True sanctuaries prioritize the elephants' well-being and allow them to live as naturally as possible. This means observing them from a respectful distance, feeding them (which is always a highlight!), and learning about their individual stories and conservation efforts. During my visit to Samui Elephant Sanctuary, I loved how we could offer them food like watermelon – it felt so special to connect with them in that way. When you’re looking for a sanctuary anywhere in Thailand, whether it’s in Chiang Mai, Phuket, or elsewhere, look for these signs of ethical care: No Chains or Hooks: Elephants should roam freely within large, natural enclosures, not be chained. The use of bullhooks is a sign of abuse. Rescue Stories: Ethical sanctuaries often house elephants rescued from logging, tourism (like riding camps), or other forms of exploitation. They'll be transparent about their rescues, just like Grandma and Kaew Ta’s stories at Samui. Natural Behavior: Do the elephants get to socialize, play in mud, and forage naturally? Or do they perform tricks for tourists? Conservation & Education: A good sanctuary will educate visitors on elephant welfare and conservation, not just entertain. Vet Care: Inquire about their veterinary care and how they ensure the elephants' health. Many places, like the well-known Elephant Nature Park near Chiang Mai (a great example of an ethical sanctuary), focus on rehabilitation and natural living. If you're specifically looking for options around Phuket, research places that adhere to the 'no riding' policy and prioritize welfare. Don't be swayed by places that offer 'elephant rides south africa' or similar activities, as these almost always involve cruel training methods and are detrimental to the welfare of Thailand's elephants. What should you bring and wear? Comfortable, Quick-Dry Clothes: You might get muddy or wet, especially if you join in mud baths or river swims (some sanctuaries offer this!). Bug Spray & Sunscreen: Essential for being outdoors in Thailand. Closed-Toe Shoes: For walking around uneven terrain. Camera: To capture those amazing memories (but always be respectful and don't use flash near their faces). Visiting an ethical elephant sanctuary is truly a life-changing experience. It’s so much more rewarding to know you’re contributing to their well-being and not their suffering. I hope this helps you choose a truly responsible and heartwarming elephant encounter on your travels in Thailand!
