I’ve personally experimented with different sugar amounts and found that reducing the sugar to about 1 1/2 cups instead of the full 2 really lets the subtle bergamot notes in the Earl Grey shine through without being overpowered by sweetness. Using the zest of one fresh orange adds a wonderful citrus aroma and a tangy contrast that complements the tea perfectly. I recommend zesting the orange carefully to avoid the bitter white pith, which can spoil the flavor. Additionally, steeping five Earl Grey tea bags in two cups of water ensures a strong tea base that's rich in flavor. This syrup is incredibly versatile—you can use it to sweeten iced teas, drizzle over desserts like pancakes or yogurt, or mix into cocktails for a unique floral-citrus note. When preparing the syrup, be sure to monitor the simmering so it thickens just right without burning the sugar. Sharing this recipe with friends has been a joy, as it’s simple enough to make in larger batches to gift or enjoy together. If you prefer a less sweet syrup, adjusting the sugar as per personal taste is key—this flexibility makes the recipe adaptable for various preferences. Remember, this homemade Earl Grey syrup combines the comforting taste of classic tea with the fresh zing of orange zest, creating a refreshing flavor enhancer for many culinary uses.
