Graphic Novel Book Review

Graphic novels hold a special place for me. This one, however, was gem that was displayed at my community library and I am immediately in love. It is the history of the Black Panthers and has so much information. It goes through the myths and then takes off with the truth. I highly recommend for everyone. I have always known that what I was taught in my adoptive home white adults was off and did not sit right and now in my adulthood I am realizing I was right. The villain was never my community or the other communities of oppressed people. The narrative was always steering me away from the ones who I really needed to look out for. Who knew? Oh ya I did! 🖐🏾🤷🏾‍♀️ It is effortlessly accurate and tremendously gripping. The tearful moments of empathy and sympathy that rocked back and forth like a boat in a storm brought me to a place of more understanding and gave me the knowledge to understand how even black people are guilty for pushing narratives that harm us because of the brainwashing in this society. I am also working on identifying these things in myself so that I can be part of a change the beams from my heart to others. Highly Recommended and let me know your honest thoughts.✊🏾📚🫂

... Read moreFinding a book that truly shifts your perspective is a rare gem, and for me, this graphic novel about the Black Panthers' history was exactly that. Beyond just a review, I want to share why tackling such pivotal historical moments through visual storytelling, especially in a 'comic book stories' format, can be so profoundly impactful. First off, the power of a graphic novel lies in its ability to make complex, often overlooked histories accessible. When you see the events unfold through dynamic 'illustration,' crafted perhaps by an artist like Anderson, whose work is hinted at in the OCR, it brings a whole new dimension to learning. The nuanced facial expressions, the setting details, and the overall visual flow help you connect with the narrative on an emotional level that plain text sometimes can't achieve. This particular book, with its focus on separating the 'myths' from the 'truth' of the Black Panthers, uses this format brilliantly to challenge preconceived notions and highlight the movement's real struggles and goals. Many of us grew up with narratives that either demonized or oversimplified key moments in history. This graphic novel felt like a personal awakening, revealing truths that resonated deeply and made me question what I had been taught. It’s not just about what happened, but why and how it impacted communities. The original article mentioned the author's personal realization about how societal brainwashing can even lead to self-harming narratives within communities, and this really hits home. Such honest and raw accounts are vital for genuine understanding and healing. For anyone looking to dive into similar impactful reads, consider exploring diverse historical graphic novels. Look for books from publishers known for thought-provoking content – sometimes independent publishers like 'Action Lab' (as mentioned in the OCR for related 'stories in Action Lab's serie'), or others specializing in historical non-fiction comics, offer incredible depth. Don't be afraid to ask librarians for recommendations; they're often treasure troves of knowledge for uncovering these kinds of 'must-read' books. Also, pay attention to the artists and writers; a distinctive style, like that from an illustrator such as Anderson, can truly elevate a story. Even elements like a well-designed 'Cover design by Chloe Rawlins' can be a sign of a carefully curated and impactful work. These graphic novels aren't just entertainment; they're vital tools for empathy, critical thinking, and understanding our shared past in a more comprehensive way. They provide a platform for stories that deserve to be heard, offering powerful insights that can motivate us to be part of positive change, radiating from our hearts to others.
