My best friend loved this one and while it definitely held my attention and I enjoyed it for the most part, there was also some moments that were iffy for me. I liked it but I didn’t LOVE it.
I definitely plan to read the next book in the series, The Arachnid, set to release April 14th of this year. But mainly because I’m super curious how things turn out.
On to book 6, also recommended by my wonderful bestie, Flock by Kate Stewart.

... Read moreOkay, fellow bookworms! If you're anything like me, you've probably stumbled upon "The Poisoner" by I.V. Ophelia and instantly wondered, "Is this going to give me Caraval vibes?" Trust me, I had the exact same thought when my best friend pushed this one into my hands, raving about it. And after turning the final page, I’m ready to spill the tea on whether this dark fantasy gem lives up to that intriguing comparison.
First off, let's talk about the aesthetic – because the cover alone gives you a hint of what you're in for. That striking dark red background, the black snake with its glowing yellow eye, surrounded by purple leaves? It practically screams mystery and forbidden magic. It immediately sets a tone that aligns with the darker, more enchanting side of fantasy, which is often what draws readers to series like Caraval. And with I.V. Ophelia being a USA TODAY Bestselling Author, you know you're in for a professionally crafted story, which always helps.
When it comes to the story itself, "The Poisoner" definitely held my attention. Ophelia builds a world steeped in intriguing magic and a palpable sense of danger. There's a certain atmospheric quality that reminds you of stepping into a hidden, enchanted realm where secrets lurk around every corner. This is where I found some common ground with Caraval – that feeling of being completely immersed in a unique, slightly unsettling, yet utterly captivating environment. Both books have main characters thrust into circumstances beyond their control, navigating a complex web of rules and illusions.
However, while I enjoyed "The Poisoner" and gave it a solid 3.5 stars, I didn't love it with the same burning passion my bestie did. For me, there were a few "iffy moments." Sometimes the pacing felt a little uneven, or I found myself wanting a bit more depth from certain character motivations. Caraval, for all its twists, always felt like it had a clear, albeit mysterious, path. With "The Poisoner," I occasionally felt a minor disconnect, wishing for just a little more clarity in certain plot points or emotional arcs. It’s hard to pinpoint without spoilers, but let's just say some revelations left me with more questions than answers in a way that sometimes pulled me out of the narrative.
But here’s the kicker: despite those minor quibbles, I'm absolutely planning to read the next book, "The Arachnid," set to release April 14th. Why? Because the core mystery and the world Ophelia has built are genuinely compelling. I'm super curious to see how certain plot threads resolve and how the characters evolve. The stakes are high, and the potential for an even more thrilling continuation is definitely there. That's a testament to the fact that even if a book isn't a perfect 5-star read, it can still leave a lasting impression and make you crave more.
So, for those asking about "Caraval vibes": Yes, you'll find similar elements of intricate world-building, a sense of magical intrigue, and character-driven mystery. If you love stories where the line between reality and illusion blurs, where secrets are currency, and where a dark, enchanting atmosphere prevails, then "The Poisoner" is definitely worth picking up. Just go in with an open mind, ready for a captivating journey that might not be identical to Caraval but certainly dances in the same magical ballroom. It's a journey I'm eager to continue with "The Arachnid," and maybe you will be too!
