NYC Hidden Treasure

Welcome to one of the quirkiest hidden gems in NYC: the Duck Library in Chelsea!

There’s a little red tin box on a pole in Chelsea labeled “Duck Library” — and when you open it, it’s just… full of tiny magnetic ducks.

It’s called the Duck Library and the rule is simple: give a duck, take a duck. Some people leave frogs or axolotls or weird little creatures, but mostly, it’s ducks. And once you know about it, you start spotting them everywhere — on fences, hydrants, street signs.

No one really knows who started it, but someone’s been dropping thousands of these around the neighborhood every month. It’s one of those random NYC things that makes zero sense and somehow still feels like it belongs here.

📍W 23rd St & 10th Ave

🦆 You don’t need to get it. Just open the box. #lemon8partner

... Read moreSo, you've heard whispers about the legendary Duck Library in NYC and you're wondering, 'Where exactly is this magical place?' Trust me, I was just as curious! After some determined searching, I can confirm that this quirky hidden gem is absolutely worth the hunt, and finding it feels like uncovering a true secret of the city. You'll want to head straight to the intersection of W 23rd St & 10th Ave in Chelsea. This corner is bustling, so keep your eyes peeled! From what I found, the 'DUCK LIBRARY' itself isn't a grand building but a small, unassuming red tin box. It’s typically mounted on a pole, often a street sign or utility pole, right around that specific intersection. It might take a moment to spot among the street art and urban clutter, but that's part of its charm – it feels like an Easter egg hunt in the concrete jungle. My tip? Look for the distinctive red box and the words 'DUCK LIBRARY' clearly marked on it. You might even see a little note saying 'GIVE A TAKE' (or 'give a duck, take a duck' as the tradition goes!). Once you've located it, the fun truly begins. This isn't just a static display; it's an interactive art installation. The concept is beautifully simple: give a duck, take a duck. I personally love the idea of contributing to this ever-changing, anonymous art project. Many people bring small magnetic ducks, which you can often find in novelty shops or online. However, I've also seen other tiny, whimsical creatures left behind – little frogs, axolotls, or even miniature action figures. The beauty is in the exchange and the surprise of what you might find inside. It’s a moment of pure, unadulterated joy in the middle of a busy city. What makes the Duck Library so special, beyond its adorable inhabitants? It's the embodiment of NYC's spontaneous, creative spirit. It's an anonymous act of joy that binds the community, even if no one knows who started it. Discovering it feels like you're in on a secret, a shared chuckle with countless others who've paused at that corner. To make your visit even more memorable, consider bringing a duck of your own to contribute. It’s a wonderful way to leave your mark on this unique piece of New York’s quirky landscape. And while you're in Chelsea, you're just a stone's throw away from other amazing spots. You could walk the High Line, explore the vibrant art galleries, or grab a bite at Chelsea Market. Finding the Duck Library can be the perfect starting point for an afternoon of exploring Chelsea’s artistic and culinary delights. It’s more than just a location; it’s an experience that truly captures the heartbeat of NYC!
