Traveling back in time in Staten Island

Spent the afternoon at Historic Richmond Town and it felt like stepping back in time. 🕰️ The Makers Market was a live history lesson — artisans were actually crafting goods the way they did in the 1800s. 🛠️

I watched a blacksmith shaping iron, a tinsmith hammering out candle holders, and a basket maker weaving reeds into intricate patterns. The smell of fresh bread baking in the open hearth and the sound of a loom weaving fabric added to the immersive experience. 🍞🧺

It was incredible to see these traditional crafts still being practiced today, preserving a piece of history in the heart of Staten Island. If you’re into hands-on history and local craftsmanship, this place is a must-visit. 💛 #lemon8partner

... Read moreAfter my unforgettable visit to Historic Richmond Town, I couldn't stop thinking about how much more there is to explore and learn about Staten Island's rich past. It truly feels like stepping onto a movie set, but it's all real history right before your eyes. Beyond the vibrant Makers Market, which is fantastic, the village itself is a treasure trove of authentic buildings spanning centuries. One thing that really caught my eye was an informational sign about the "Site of Dobler's Court House Hotel." It had a fascinating vintage photograph of the old hotel, and I learned it stood there from 1855 until it was taken down around 1942. Seeing that really brought home how much history is preserved here, not just in the crafts but in the very land itself. Walking through the streets, I felt like I was literally stepping through time, with each building telling its own story. It's not just about watching artisans; it's about immersing yourself in a living timeline. Speaking of artisans, the original post mentioned blacksmithing, tinsmithing, and basket weaving, but there's so much more traditional craftsmanship to witness. I saw someone in historical attire, wearing a plaid shirt and white apron, skillfully working on a wooden lathe, crafting an item with such precision. It's amazing to see these ancient techniques kept alive, showing how everyday items were made before industrialization. I also spotted what looked like candlemaking happening under a tent – another glimpse into daily life from centuries ago. These aren't just demonstrations; they're passionate individuals dedicated to preserving skills that might otherwise be forgotten, ensuring that this traditional craftsmanship continues for future generations. If you're planning a trip, I highly recommend dedicating a good few hours, or even a full day, to really soak it all in. Wander through the historic homes, pop into the general store, and chat with the interpreters who are full of stories. They really bring the past to life! This place is truly Staten Island's best kept secret for history buffs and anyone looking for a unique, educational, and hands-on experience. It's a fantastic way to connect with how people lived and worked in bygone eras, making it a perfect spot for families or anyone curious about American history. You get to witness history unfold, from the humble beginnings of simple tools to the complex social structures represented by the various buildings. What I love most is how Historic Richmond Town isn't just a collection of old buildings; it's an active community dedicated to education and preservation. They have special events throughout the year, from reenactments to seasonal festivals, which offer even more layers of engagement. It’s not often you find a place in a bustling city like New York where you can truly disconnect from the present and immerse yourself in yesteryear. Whether you're interested in colonial life, 19th-century trades, or just a charming day out, this historic spot on Staten Island offers something special. You leave not just with souvenirs, but with a deeper appreciation for the ingenuity and resilience of past generations and the ongoing effort to keep their stories alive.
