The Art of Negotiation📌

Negotiation is not a matter of losing, winning, but of finding a mutually beneficial solution and maintaining a relationship. This is at the heart of the Harvard Negotiation Project, which revolutionized the old idea: "If you're asking who won, that means you lost." The real goal is to find a solution that makes both parties happy without hurting the relationship.

4 Steps to Becoming an Expert Negotiator

The Principles for Effective Dialogue consists of 4 key steps, as follows:

1. Focus on attention, not standpoint.

Negotiators often stick to arguments on obvious "standpoints" (such as "I want the window to open"), but don't look at the hidden "interests" behind it (such as "I want fresh air"). Understanding the other party's real interests will lead to much more creative solutions; an easy way is to ask "why?" to see their point of view.

2. Use neutral criteria

When interests conflict, rather than debate, use "neutral criteria" or fair rules that are not based on personal opinion, such as market prices, laws, or expert opinion. Doing so turns opinion clashes into common goal-finding.

3. Creative alternatives for the common good

The difference between negotiations is not a problem, but an opportunity to find new, creative solutions. Let's brainstorm all possible solutions, allowing ideas to flow freely without first judging, and when you get all the ideas, consider finding the best options together.

4. Separate people from problems

The key principle is to be "gentle with the individual but strict with the problem," which means treating the other party with respect; while maintaining a serious focus on resolving the problem, establishing a relationship before negotiation improves the chances of success by 25-30%.

Coping with difficult situations

Dirty Strategy: If the other party uses an unfair strategy, let you address it directly, but focus on the problem, not the individual.

Deal with the Stronger: Let you create a BATNA (Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement) or Best Choice. If this negotiation is unsuccessful, the more options you have, the higher your negotiating authority.

Personal Attack: When attacked, you use "Negotiation Jujitsu" with no interaction, but ask "Why do you want that?" or "If you do," to get them back to your perspective.

The real negotiation is not a competition, but it is working together to find a solution that satisfies the interests of both sides, which will lead to a much more lasting outcome.
