Overmedicated on Thyroid Med

Did you know that thyroid medication can have unexpected and severe side effects? One of the most shocking and distressing experiences is hair loss. Imagine having a head full of beautiful, angel-white hair, only to see it fall out in patches overnight. This is exactly what happened to a 92-year-old woman after she was over-medicated by a doctor.

Many people start thyroid medication without fully understanding the potential risks. Hair loss is just one of the many side effects that can severely impact one's quality of life. If you or someone you know is starting thyroid medication, it’s crucial to be aware of these possibilities and to monitor your health closely.

Over-medication with thyroid medication can lead to a range of symptoms due to an excess of thyroid hormone in the body. These symptoms can include:

1. Increased Heart Rate: Palpitations or a rapid heart rate can occur.

2. Anxiety and Nervousness: Feeling unusually anxious or nervous.

3. Insomnia: Difficulty sleeping or staying asleep.

4. Weight Loss: Unintended weight loss despite normal or increased appetite.

5. Tremors: Shaking or trembling, especially in the hands.

6. Heat Intolerance: Feeling excessively hot or sweating more than usual.

7. Fatigue and Muscle Weakness: Feeling unusually tired or experiencing muscle weakness.

8. Frequent Bowel Movements: Increased frequency of bowel movements or diarrhea.

9. Hair Loss: Sudden or excessive hair loss.

10. Menstrual Irregularities: Changes in menstrual patterns for women.

11. Irritability: Increased irritability or mood swings.

12. Decreased Bone Density: Long-term over-medication can lead to decreased bone density, increasing the risk of osteoporosis.

Over-medication can lead to a range of issues, including severe hair loss. Always consult with your healthcare provider about the proper dosage and potential side effects. Stay informed and proactive in managing your thyroid health.

2024/6/25 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, so I've been diving deeper into this thyroid medication topic, especially after hearing stories that just break your heart. Like that one about the sweet 92-year-old lady who had this truly beautiful, angel-white hair, and then suddenly, after being over-medicated on thyroid med, it all fell out into patches. Can you imagine the shock? It really makes you realize how vital it is to understand what's happening with our bodies and our meds. When we talk about hypothyroidism and its treatment, levothyroxine (or even natural desiccated thyroid like NP Thyroid, as I've heard some use), the goal is to get your thyroid hormone levels just right. But sometimes, things go off balance, and you become over-medicated. This means your body is getting too much thyroid hormone, pushing you into a hyperthyroid state. And guess what? Both too little and too much thyroid hormone can wreak havoc on your hair! Our hair follicles are incredibly sensitive to hormone levels. When thyroid hormones are out of whack, whether it's too high or too low, the normal hair growth cycle gets disrupted. Hair often prematurely enters the 'resting' phase (telogen effluvium) and then falls out, sometimes in alarming amounts. It’s not just thinning; for some, it's those devastating patches. I mean, "I never had hair" issues like this before starting medication, only to find myself stressing over every strand that comes out. So, what can you do if you suspect your levothyroxine or other thyroid medication might be causing hair loss? First and foremost, don't adjust your dosage yourself. This is super important. Your doctor needs to be involved. I'd suggest keeping a detailed log: note when you started noticing hair loss, any other symptoms you're experiencing (like those listed in the main article – increased heart rate, anxiety, insomnia, etc.), and even your diet or stress levels. This information will be invaluable for your doctor. When you talk to your healthcare provider, clearly express your concerns. Ask if your current dosage might be too high. Sometimes, a slight adjustment can make a world of difference. It's also worth discussing other potential causes of hair loss, as it's not always just the thyroid. Things like iron deficiency, vitamin D levels, stress, or other hormonal changes can also play a role. A comprehensive blood panel can help rule out other issues. Beyond medical adjustments, there are some supportive steps you can take. Gentle hair care is key – avoid harsh chemicals, tight hairstyles, and excessive heat. Focus on a nutrient-rich diet with plenty of protein, vitamins (especially B vitamins, vitamin D, and iron), and minerals. Some people find success with biotin supplements, but always check with your doctor first. Remember, hair regrowth can take time, often several months, so patience is crucial. It’s a journey, and you’re not alone in feeling frustrated, but staying proactive and working closely with your doctor is your best bet for seeing your beautiful hair, perhaps not angel-white just yet, but healthy again.
