Rise of the shield hero season 4 is ok. The shield hero does take a back seat in this season as we dig deeper into why Raphtilia was being attacked by the empire.
As interesting it was digging into their story and background. this season does feel like a filler season as we wait for the waves to return.
... Read moreOkay, so I just finished watching The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 4, and I have to be honest, my feelings are a bit mixed, hence my 2.5/5 rating. While it was definitely entertaining enough to keep me watching, it felt like a significant departure from the action-packed, world-saving vibe we got in earlier seasons, especially as we await the return of the dreaded waves.
One of the biggest shifts this season is how much Naofumi, our titular Shield Hero, steps into the background. Instead of leading the charge against massive threats, the narrative really hones in on Raphtalia’s personal journey. We delve deep into her past, uncovering the reasons behind the attacks she endured and her connection to the empire. It’s a compelling backstory, providing much-needed depth to one of our beloved characters. Seeing her grow and confront her demons was a highlight, and it certainly broadened the scope of the world beyond just Naofumi’s immediate struggles. The animated sequences focusing on her past were visually striking, adding a new layer to the series' lore. It was fascinating to see how these events shaped her into the strong warrior she is today and how they continue to influence her actions alongside Naofumi.
However, this deep dive into character backstory comes at a cost. For many, including myself, the season felt a lot like filler. We're used to the high stakes of the 'waves' – the interdimensional threats that Naofumi, Raphtalia, Filo, and Melty constantly battle. This season, those larger threats are largely on hold, replaced by more political intrigue and personal quests. While these subplots are interesting, focusing on the internal struggles within the kingdom and smaller, more localized conflicts, they didn't always carry the same urgency or epic scale we've come to expect. It felt like the pacing slowed down considerably, building up anticipation for future conflicts rather than resolving immediate ones.
Despite the 'filler' criticisms, there were moments that kept me hooked. The animation remained consistently good, especially during character-focused scenes, and the voice acting continued to be top-notch. It was satisfying to see the bonds between Naofumi, Raphtalia, and Filo strengthen, even if their adventures were on a smaller scale. Melty also had some impactful moments, reinforcing her role in the royal family. The season also introduced some intriguing new characters and expanded on the world's lore, hinting at much larger conspiracies beyond the waves.
Ultimately, Season 4 feels like a crucial bridge season. It’s necessary for deep character progression and world expansion, laying vital groundwork for what's to come. While it might not have delivered the constant action of previous seasons, it definitely sets the stage for an explosive Season 5. If you're invested in the characters and the overarching narrative, it's worth watching to understand the full picture, but manage your expectations for a fast-paced plot. I'm genuinely excited to see how these newly established plot points and character developments will culminate when the waves finally return!
