Gospel for today:
Matthew 18:1-5, 10, 12-14

Gospel for today according to Saint Matthew

Matthew 18:1-5, 10, 12-14

The disciples approached Jesus and said,

"Who is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven?"

He called a child over, placed it in their midst, and said,

"Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children,

you will not enter the Kingdom of heaven.

Whoever becomes humble like this child

is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven.

And whoever receives one child such as this in my name receives me.

"See that you do not despise one of these little ones,

for I say to you that their angels in heaven

always look upon the face of my heavenly Father.

What is your opinion?

If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them goes astray,

will he not leave the ninety-nine in the hills

and go in search of the stray?

And if he finds it, amen, I say to you, he rejoices more over it

than over the ninety-nine that did not stray.

In just the same way, it is not the will of your heavenly Father

that one of these little ones be lost."

... Read moreThe passage from Matthew 18:1-5, 10, 12-14 presents a core teaching of Jesus on humility, compassion, and the immense value God places on every individual, especially those who are vulnerable or have gone astray. Jesus highlights that greatness in the Kingdom of Heaven is not about status or power but about becoming like a child—humble, trusting, and sincere in faith. This radical teaching challenges common worldly values and calls believers to embrace childlike humility as a pathway to divine greatness. Jesus’ emphasis on receiving and protecting "little ones" underscores God's protective and watchful nature, affirmed by the image of angels continually beholding the Father's face. This suggests that every person is precious and cared for by God, implying a divine accountability for the treatment of others. This teaching encourages believers to treat each person with love, patience, gentleness, mercy, and persistence, embodying God's character in both relationships and community life. Furthermore, the parable of the lost sheep illustrates the Father’s passionate desire to seek and save those who have gone astray. It demonstrates that God rejoices profoundly when the lost are found, placing extraordinary value on every individual’s salvation and well-being. This narrative invites believers to reflect on their role in actively seeking out and supporting those who may have wandered from faith or are marginalized in society. The OCR text in the article emphasizes the spiritual lessons: "Value others as God does," "He reveals the Father’s heart to seek and save each one who strays," and calls for avoiding harsh judgment in favor of mercy and persistent love. These reminders echo throughout Christian tradition, urging the faithful to emulate God’s loving pursuit of every soul and to foster communities marked by kindness and acceptance. In the context of contemporary spirituality, these teachings remain deeply relevant. They challenge individuals to reevaluate pursuits of personal greatness and instead focus on serving others with humility and empathy. They also invite a deeper understanding of the divine nature as merciful and relational, which can inspire believers to live out their faith authentically and impactfully in today's world. This passage encourages an active faith where believers become agents of God’s mercy, extending care particularly to the vulnerable, such as children and those lost in life’s challenges. The invitation to "turn and become like children" is a call for inner transformation, leading to a more genuine, humble, and loving Christian life aligned with the heart of God.
