Matthew 5:1-12a

Gospel for today according to Saint Matthew

Matthew 5:1-12a

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain,

and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him.

He began to teach them, saying:

"Blessed are the poor in spirit,

for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are they who mourn,

for they will be comforted.

Blessed are the meek,

for they will inherit the land.

Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness,

for they will be satisfied.

Blessed are the merciful,

for they will be shown mercy.

Blessed are the clean of heart,

for they will see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers,

for they will be called children of God.

Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,

for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you

and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me.

Rejoice and be glad,

for your reward will be great in heaven."

... Read moreThe Beatitudes, as recorded in Matthew 5:1-12a, are foundational teachings from Jesus that offer deep spiritual guidance and hope. When Jesus ascended the mountain and sat down to teach his disciples, he outlined a series of blessings that describe the attitudes and qualities valued in the Kingdom of Heaven. Each Beatitude begins with "Blessed are..." highlighting the virtues that lead to divine favor and spiritual fulfillment. For example, "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven," encourages humility and dependence on God rather than material wealth or self-sufficiency. This teaching challenges worldly values and invites believers into a spiritual kingdom where God's reign is paramount. Similarly, "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted" points to God's compassion and promise of comfort in times of sorrow and loss. Jesus’ words offer solace to all who face hardship or grief. The Beatitudes also emphasize righteousness and mercy, with blessings for those who "hunger and thirst for righteousness" and the "merciful," reinforcing the importance of justice, compassion, and kindness. "Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God," speaks to purity of intention and integrity, suggesting a close relationship with the divine for those who seek inner holiness. Jesus also blesses the peacemakers, who actively foster reconciliation and harmony, calling them "children of God," which highlights their role as reflections of God’s love on earth. The final blessings address persecution and insult endured for righteousness, assuring believers that their faithfulness is rewarded in Heaven. These teachings have influenced Christian thought and practice for centuries and continue to inspire spiritual growth, ethical conduct, and hope. Understanding the Beatitudes enriches our appreciation of the Gospel’s message of love, justice, and divine promise. Embracing these values in daily life can transform personal relationships and communities, encouraging followers to seek humility, mercy, and peace amidst a challenging world. The Beatitudes remain a timeless guide for living a life aligned with God’s will, promising great rewards both now and in eternity.
