Luke 9:43-45

Gospel for today according to Saint Luke

Luke 9:43b-45

While they were all amazed at his every deed,

Jesus said to his disciples,

"Pay attention to what I am telling you.

The Son of Man is to be handed over to men."

But they did not understand this saying;

its meaning was hidden from them

so that they should not understand it,

and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.

... Read moreReading Luke 9:43-45 today really got me thinking about how we approach faith. It's so striking how “while they were all amazed at his every deed,” Jesus drops this profound, unsettling truth: “The Son of Man is to be handed over to men.” And then, the disciples “did not understand this saying; its meaning was hidden from them so that they should not understand it, and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.” This passage always makes me pause. It feels so relatable, doesn't it? We often love to celebrate Jesus' mighty works – the miracles, the healing, the astonishing power – because those moments are filled with joy and wonder. They inspire us and strengthen our belief. But then there are those harder truths, the parts of God's plan that are difficult to grasp or outright painful. Just like the disciples, I sometimes find myself wanting to shy away from the “reality of his suffering” and “the cross.” It's not easy to accept that path, especially when it challenges our comfort or our expectations of how things “should” go. The text says the meaning “was hidden from them,” and they were “afraid to ask.” This isn't just about intellectual understanding; it's about a deep-seated fear of what Jesus' prophecy truly meant for their future and for His. For me, this is a powerful reminder that “true discipleship” isn't just about basking in His glory. It also “means recognizing not just His glory but also His path of sacrifice.” It's about embracing the full picture of Christ, not just the parts that are easy or convenient. When I encounter moments in my own life where God's plan feels unclear, or where I face suffering that I “did not understand,” this passage encourages me. It tells me it's okay not to have all the answers. The disciples, who walked with Jesus daily, didn't always “understand his words.” What they were called to do, and what we are called to do, is to trust. Even when “its meaning was hidden from them,” they continued to follow. This isn't to say we shouldn't seek understanding, but rather that our faith shouldn't crumble when understanding isn't immediately available. It's about remembering that “the way of salvation is greater than human expectation.” God's wisdom far surpasses our own, and sometimes, the most profound lessons come from those moments of not knowing, from trusting in a plan that's bigger than us. So, as I reflect on “Luke 9:43-45,” I'm reminded to always strive for deeper faith, even when the road ahead involves sacrifice and moments I can't fully comprehend.
