Gospel for today: Luke 10:17-24
Gospel for today according to Saint Luke
Luke 10:17-24
The seventy-two disciples returned rejoicing and said to Jesus,
"Lord, even the demons are subject to us because of your name."
Jesus said, "I have observed Satan fall like lightning from the sky.
Behold, I have given you the power
'to tread upon serpents' and scorpions
and upon the full force of the enemy
and nothing will harm you.
Nevertheless, do not rejoice because the spirits are subject to you,
but rejoice because your names are written in heaven."
At that very moment he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said,
"I give you praise, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,
for although you have hidden these things
from the wise and the learned
you have revealed them to the childlike.
Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will.
All things have been handed over to me by my Father.
No one knows who the Son is except the Father,
and who the Father is except the Son
and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him."
Turning to the disciples in private he said,
"Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.
For I say to you,
many prophets and kings desired to see what you see,
but did not see it,
and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it."

The passage from Luke 10:17-24 offers a rich insight into the spiritual dynamics experienced by Jesus’ disciples. After their mission, the seventy-two disciples returned with joy and amazement at the authority they had been given over evil forces. However, Jesus reminds them—and us—that the greater reason for rejoicing is not in miraculous powers, but in the assurance of salvation—their names being written in heaven. This teaching emphasizes the importance of humility and spiritual insight. The imagery of Satan falling like lightning illustrates the defeat of evil through divine authority. The disciples are empowered to 'tread upon serpents and scorpions,' symbolic of overcoming spiritual adversaries, yet Jesus shifts the focus toward eternal life and heavenly reward. Moreover, Jesus’ prayer of praise to the Father highlights how divine truths are revealed not necessarily through worldly wisdom but through a childlike openness and faith. This reminds believers that spiritual understanding transcends human knowledge, inviting a heart of trust and dependence on God’s grace. For modern readers, Luke 10:17-24 encourages us to reflect on where our joy and confidence lie. In a world often obsessed with power and control, this passage directs our attention to the transformative power of faith and the hope of eternal life. The blessings Jesus speaks of—seeing and hearing divine truth—challenge us to cultivate spiritual awareness and gratitude for the revelation God offers through His Son. In practical terms, this passage calls for believers to live with assurance of God’s protection while focusing on the ultimate promise of salvation. It encourages prayer, humility, and a joyful spirit that finds strength not in personal achievements but in being part of God’s kingdom. This perspective fosters resilience in facing life's challenges, reminding us that the true victory is found in the spiritual heritage granted by God, a treasure more valuable than any earthly success. In connection with today’s gospel, believers may find encouragement to share their faith with others with joy and humility, knowing that the true source of their power and peace comes from their relationship with God. This profound passage continues to inspire Christian discipleship, inviting all to rejoice in the gift of faith and the hope of resurrection life.
