Gospel for today: Luke 11:29-32
Gospel for today according to Saint Luke
Luke 11:29-32
While still more people gathered in the crowd, Jesus said to them,
"This generation is an evil generation;
it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it,
except the sign of Jonah.
Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites,
so will the Son of Man be to this generation.
At the judgment
the queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation
and she will condemn them,
because she came from the ends of the earth
to hear the wisdom of Solomon,
and there is something greater than Solomon here.
At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation
and condemn it,
because at the preaching of Jonah they repented,
and there is something greater than Jonah here."

The passage from Luke 11:29-32 powerfully illustrates a moment when Jesus addresses a crowd demanding miraculous signs as proof of His divine authority. This generation’s desire for signs reflects a deeper spiritual skepticism and a resistance to faith based solely on witnessed miracles. Jesus points them to the Sign of Jonah as the only sign they will receive, linking His future death and resurrection to Jonah’s three days in the belly of the great fish. Just as Jonah’s experience led the people of Nineveh to repentance, so too will Jesus’ suffering and resurrection call for genuine conversion. The mention of the "queen of the south" (the Queen of Sheba) and the men of Nineveh at the judgment highlights the theme of accountability. Both sought wisdom and repented in response to God’s message, contrasting with the contemporaries of Jesus who failed to recognize the greater wisdom and power present in Him. This comparison underscores the gravity of rejecting Jesus despite clear evidence of His mission. Understanding this passage enriches the believer’s appreciation of humility and openness required in faith. It invites reflection on the importance of recognizing signs not as mere spectacles but as profound calls to change and embrace God’s wisdom. Jesus’ emphasis on repentance and judgment remains deeply relevant, encouraging readers today to seek spiritual insight beyond demands for proof. By contemplating the "Sign of Jonah," believers can find reassurance in God’s mercy and His invitation to transformation, affirming the ongoing relevance of Scripture in modern life.
