Gospel for today: Matthew 5:17-19
Gospel for today according to Saint Matthew
Matthew 5:17-19
Jesus said to his disciples:
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets.
I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.
Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away,
not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter
will pass from the law,
until all things have taken place.
Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments
and teaches others to do so
will be called least in the Kingdom of heaven.
But whoever obeys and teaches these commandments
will be called greatest in the Kingdom of heaven.”

Many of us have heard Jesus say, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.” But what does it truly mean that Jesus fulfilled the Law, rather than abolishing it? This passage in Matthew 5:17-19 is a cornerstone for understanding Christian ethics and our relationship with God's commands. From my perspective, this isn't just a theological statement; it's a profound declaration that clarifies Jesus's identity and mission. He wasn't a revolutionary in the sense of tearing down everything that came before Him. Instead, He perfectly embodied the Law, lived out its every requirement, and through His life, death, and resurrection, He brought it to its intended purpose. He completed what the Law pointed towards – forgiveness, grace, and a new covenant through Him. The OCR content perfectly captures this: "JESUS CLARIFIES THAT HE DID NOT COME TO ABOLISH THE LAW OR THE PROPHETS BUT TO FULFILL THEM." Think about it: the Old Testament Law, with its intricate rules and sacrifices, was a shadow of the good things to come. Jesus is the substance. He didn't get rid of the moral principles, like loving God and loving your neighbor, but He elevated them from external compliance to internal heart transformation. He showed us that God's demands go deeper than mere actions; they touch our thoughts and intentions. As the OCR reminds us, it’s about "LIVING IN ALIGNMENT WITH GOD'S" principles, not just following a checklist. Then, Jesus emphasizes the permanence of God’s word: "until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place." This tells me that God's truth is eternal and unchanging. While the ceremonial aspects of the Law were fulfilled in Christ, the underlying moral and spiritual principles remain. They are not burdens, but guides to a life of holiness and purpose. This is where the "grace and truth" brought by Christ, as highlighted in the OCR, becomes so vital – we strive for these principles not in our own strength, but empowered by His Spirit. The verse then shifts to a call to action: "whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do so will be called least in the Kingdom of heaven. But whoever obeys and teaches these commandments will be called greatest in the Kingdom of heaven." This pushes me to reflect on how I live my faith. It’s not enough to just know the commands; we are called to obey them and, importantly, to teach others to walk in obedience. This doesn't mean becoming legalistic or judgmental. Instead, it means living as an example, sharing the transformative power of Jesus, and helping others understand the freedom and joy found in living a life that honors God. The OCR beautifully states this: "WE ARE CALLED TO NOT ONLY FOLLOW HIS TEACHINGS BUT ALSO HELP OTHERS WALK IN OBEDIENCE." For me, this passage is an encouragement to pursue a deeper, more authentic faith. It reminds me that Jesus didn't come to make things easier by removing standards, but to make us capable of meeting those standards through Him. It inspires me to live a life that reflects His truth and grace, and to share that with everyone around me. It's a continuous journey of growth and understanding what it truly means to live in alignment with God's eternal word.
