Gospel for today according to Luke

Luke 1:26-38

The angel Gabriel was sent from God

to a town of Galilee called Nazareth,

to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph,

of the house of David,

and the virgin's name was Mary.

And coming to her, he said,

"Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you."

But she was greatly troubled at what was said

and pondered what sort of greeting this might be.

Then the angel said to her,

"Do not be afraid, Mary,

for you have found favor with God.

Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son,

and you shall name him Jesus.

He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High,

and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father,

and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever,

and of his Kingdom there will be no end."

But Mary said to the angel,

"How can this be,

since I have no relations with a man?"

And the angel said to her in reply,

"The Holy Spirit will come upon you,

and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.

Therefore the child to be born

will be called holy, the Son of God.

And behold, Elizabeth, your relative,

has also conceived a son in her old age,

and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren;

for nothing will be impossible for God."

Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.

May it be done to me according to your word."

Then the angel departed from her.

... Read moreWhen I first encountered the story of the angel Gabriel's visit to Mary in Luke 1:26-38 within the Holy Bible, it truly captivated my heart. It's more than just a historical account; it's a profound lesson in faith and divine intervention, especially relevant for us today as we seek to understand God's will. Imagine being Mary, a young woman in Nazareth, betrothed to Joseph, and suddenly standing before an angel. The angel appeared to Mary to announce the most incredible news: she had found favor with God and would conceive and bear Jesus, the Son of the Most High. Her initial reaction, 'How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?' is so relatable. It’s a human response to something utterly beyond comprehension, an impossible situation by earthly standards. But Gabriel's words were clear and comforting: 'The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.' This promise highlights one of the most powerful messages in this passage: that nothing is impossible with God. This isn't just a theological statement; it's a practical truth for our lives. When we face challenges that seem insurmountable, or when God calls us to something we feel unqualified for, Mary's story reminds us that His power transcends all human limitations. The OCR text beautifully summarizes Mary's incredible response: 'Mary responds with humble faith: "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word."' This 'fiat' — her complete surrender to God's plan, despite not fully understanding it — is a beacon for us. It teaches us to trust God's promises even when His plans stretch our understanding. It’s about offering our lives with the same humble obedience, recognizing that God's ways are higher than our own. For me, this passage on the angel Gabriel's visit to Mary is a beautiful reminder of how God often chooses unlikely people and works in ways beyond our natural understanding. It challenges me to examine my own level of trust and surrender. Am I willing to say, 'Let it be done to me according to your word,' even when the path ahead is unclear? This Gospel for Today isn't just an ancient text; it's a living word that invites us into a deeper relationship with God. It encourages us to lean into faith, embrace the miraculous, and believe that if God can orchestrate the incarnation of His Son through a humble virgin, He can certainly work wonders in our lives. So, as I reflect on December 08, 2025 (or any day for that matter), Mary’s example strengthens my resolve to trust in the divine power that makes all things possible.
