Gospel for today according to Luke

Luke 1:26-38

The angel Gabriel was sent from God

to a town of Galilee called Nazareth,

to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph,

of the house of David,

and the virgin's name was Mary.

And coming to her, he said,

"Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you."

But she was greatly troubled at what was said

and pondered what sort of greeting this might be.

Then the angel said to her,

"Do not be afraid, Mary,

for you have found favor with God.

Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son,

and you shall name him Jesus.

He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High,

and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father,

and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever,

and of his Kingdom there will be no end."

But Mary said to the angel,

"How can this be,

since I have no relations with a man?"

And the angel said to her in reply,

"The Holy Spirit will come upon you,

and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.

Therefore the child to be born

will be called holy, the Son of God.

And behold, Elizabeth, your relative,

has also conceived a son in her old age,

and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren;

for nothing will be impossible for God."

Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.

May it be done to me according to your word."

Then the angel departed from her.

... Read moreThe passage from Luke 1:26-38, often referred to as The Annunciation, holds deep significance in Christian faith as it marks the moment when the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary to announce that she would conceive and bear Jesus, the Son of God. This event symbolizes the beginning of God’s fulfillment of the promise of salvation for humanity through Jesus Christ. Being addressed as "full of grace" and told that the Lord is with her, Mary’s initial response of fear and contemplation reflects the human aspect of encountering the divine. Her question about how she could conceive a child without having relations with a man reveals her humility and openness. The angel’s reassurance that the Holy Spirit will overshadow her emphasizes the divine origin of Jesus and the miraculous nature of his birth. Furthermore, the mention of Elizabeth conceiving in old age highlights that with God, nothing is impossible—an encouragement for faith and trust in God’s power even in seemingly impossible circumstances. For believers today, this passage inspires profound trust in God’s plan and reminds us to say “Yes” to God’s calling, just as Mary did when she accepted her role as the handmaid of the Lord. It encourages the faithful to embrace God’s will with faith and humility, even when faced with uncertainty. In daily life, reflecting on Luke 1:26-38 can deepen one’s spirituality by fostering hope and assurance that divine help and guidance are always near. Believers can find strength in knowing that God works through ordinary people and moments to accomplish extraordinary plans. Whether used in personal prayer or shared in community settings, the Annunciation passage serves as an affirmation of God’s everlasting kingdom and the central role of Jesus Christ within it, reinforcing essential themes of faith, grace, and salvation in Christian teaching.
