Gospel for today: Luke 6:27-38
Gospel for today according to Saint Luke
Luke 6:27-38
Jesus said to his disciples:
"To you who hear I say, love your enemies,
do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you,
pray for those who mistreat you.
To the person who strikes you on one cheek,
offer the other one as well,
and from the person who takes your cloak,
do not withhold even your tunic.
Give to everyone who asks of you,
and from the one who takes what is yours do not demand it back.
Do to others as you would have them do to you.
For if you love those who love you,
what credit is that to you?
Even sinners love those who love them.
And if you do good to those who do good to you,
what credit is that to you?
Even sinners do the same.
If you lend money to those from whom you expect repayment,
what credit is that to you?
Even sinners lend to sinners,
and get back the same amount.
But rather, love your enemies and do good to them,
and lend expecting nothing back;
then your reward will be great
and you will be children of the Most High,
for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked.
Be merciful, just as also your Father is merciful.
"Stop judging and you will not be judged.
Stop condemning and you will not be condemned.
Forgive and you will be forgiven.
Give and gifts will be given to you;
a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing,
will be poured into your lap.
For the measure with which you measure
will in return be measured out to you."

The message of Luke 6:27-38 is truly a game-changer, isn't it? When I first read Jesus' teaching on loving enemies, it felt incredibly challenging, almost impossible. My initial thought was, “How can I genuinely love someone who has hurt me, or bless those who curse me?” It’s a concept so counter-cultural, so against our natural human inclination to retaliate or withdraw. But the more I meditated on these verses, the more I realized the profound freedom and inner peace that can come from trying to live them out. I’ve personally struggled with holding onto grudges, and that feeling always left me restless, sometimes even anxious. This scripture, particularly the call to "pray for those who mistreat you," became a turning point for me. It's not about condoning harmful actions, but about releasing the burden of anger and bitterness from my own heart. I found that when I started to pray for those I found difficult, something shifted within me. It wasn't just about them; it was about me letting go of the control their actions had over my emotional well-being. This passage offers a unique way to find solace, even when facing relational difficulties, by shifting focus from seeking justice to extending grace, which surprisingly alleviates a lot of internal anxiety. Another part of Luke 6:27-38 that deeply resonates is the emphasis on generosity and giving without expecting return, as highlighted in verse 35: "lend expecting nothing back; then your reward will be great and you will be children of the Most High." This isn't just about money; it’s about a generous spirit in all aspects of life – time, effort, understanding. I've tried to apply this by offering help to friends or even strangers, simply because I can, without thinking about what I might get back. And honestly, the joy and fulfillment I’ve received have been far greater than any repayment. It truly mirrors the heart of Christ, who gives boundlessly without condition. The "Golden Rule" – doing to others as you would have them do to you – is beautifully woven throughout, urging us to embody God's kindness and compassion. The passage also gives a clear instruction not to judge or condemn. I've realized how much energy I used to spend judging others, and how that judgment often reflected my own insecurities. When I started to consciously stop judging and instead practice forgiveness, I felt a weight lift. It allowed me to see people, and myself, with more mercy, reflecting God's mercy and grace that is so freely given to us. This journey of forgiving and giving without expecting return challenges us to live differently from the world. It reminds us that our actions towards others are observed by God, and the way we extend kindness and generosity will indeed shape the way we receive it. It really calls us to embody God's kindness and compassion in every interaction, even when it's hard, leading to a life filled with spiritual richness and genuine peace.
