Having tried multiple Hawaiian BBQ spots, I can share personal insights on what makes Ono Hawaiian BBQ stand out. Their consistent flavor across many franchise locations is a huge plus, offering reliably good quality each time I visit. The plate lunches come with generous portions: typically protein paired with two scoops of rice, a scoop of macaroni salad, and veggies, which is a classic Hawaiian meal setup. For protein lovers, their chicken options such as Island Fire Chicken with spicy sauce, Chicken Katsu, and Teriyaki Chicken are well-marinated and tender. The Kalbi Short Ribs have a nice Korean BBQ touch and are grilled to perfection with great texture—tender but not mushy, which is not always the case at other places. What I appreciate most about Ono is the variety of combo plates, like the BBQ and Katsu Mix or the Seafood Mix featuring crispy shrimp and island white fish, giving a nice balance of flavors in one meal. The affordability is also noteworthy: meals range reasonably, making it a great casual dining choice. Additionally, they offer kid-friendly Keiki Meals which include smaller portions with drinks and even fruit pouches, perfect for families. From my visits, the ambiance reflects Hawaiian culture with appropriate music, enhancing the dining experience, which can sometimes be missing in other locations. For beverage options, they offer Hawaiian Sun drinks and other island-style beverages that complement the meals well. If you enjoy sweeter tropical desserts, their guava pie is a unique take on the classic apple pie but with guava filling and frosting on top—an enjoyable treat for those who like island flavors. For those who prefer something less sweet, I recommend trying lilikoi (passion fruit) flavors which are more tart and refreshing. Overall, Ono Hawaiian BBQ serves up a reliably tasty and authentic Hawaiian BBQ experience with solid portion sizes and good value, making it a strong contender compared to the other 14 eateries reviewed. Whether you're craving classic grilled chicken, kalua pork, or seafood options, Ono tends to deliver consistent quality that is perfect for casual dining or family meals.
