Jesse Boot!

Jesse Boot, the Nottingham entrepreneur who built Boots the Chemist into a national chain, left the city with more than just a pharmacy empire - he also gave it one of its most beloved green spaces.

In the early 1920s, Boot donated the deeds to the land at Highfields Park to Nottingham City Council, and the park was designed to sweep up toward the magnificent Trent Building you can see rising above the lake - built between 1922 and 1928 and formally opened by King George V and Queen Mary.

The boating lake itself started life as a much smaller fish pond on the original estate, enlarged as part of

the park’s creation 🛶
