HOW TO UNDO WHAT YOU WERE TAUGHT

Most people spend years learning what to think.

Very few spend time learning how to think.

The thinking game begins the moment you question the ideas you inherited.

Not to rebel.

Not to argue.

To see clearly.

Question what you fear.

Question what you assume.

Question what you’ve repeated so many times that it feels true.

Because repetition creates belief.

And belief creates reality.

The goal isn’t to reject everything you were taught.

The goal is to discover what is actually true through your own experience.

Observe.

Question.

Experience.

Awareness isn’t adding more information.

Awareness is removing what isn’t real.

You were never meant to fit into someone else’s story.

You were meant to wake up and write your own.

... Read moreIn my journey toward undoing what I was taught, one of the most transformative realizations was recognizing how much of my daily thinking was shaped by repetition and external authority rather than firsthand experience. The article’s emphasis on questioning what we fear and assume deeply resonates because fear often acts as a conditioning tool that keeps us bound to certain beliefs without scrutiny. I found that cultivating curiosity instead of compliance was vital. Instead of simply accepting "be good" or "follow the rules" as unquestionable, I started investigating why such maxims existed and whether they truly aligned with my values. This gradual process of "unlearning" also meant releasing the ingrained need to fit in or seek comfort in popular opinions. The advice in the article about awareness not being about adding more information but about removing what isn’t real was eye-opening. In practice, this meant I slowed down my mental chatter and observed thoughts and reactions without immediate judgment or acceptance. This observation step allowed me to identify which beliefs were my own versus those inherited or imposed. Through deliberate experience—testing beliefs in real-life situations instead of relying on secondhand ideas—I developed a more resilient and authentic understanding of myself and the world. This experiential learning unlocked a freedom that felt inaccessible when living under inherited mental frameworks. To anyone trying to undo what they were taught, I suggest starting small: pick one belief or fear, explore its origins, question its validity, and observe how your feelings shift when you challenge it. Trust the process of discovery, stay open-minded, and embrace discomfort as part of growth. Ultimately, reclaiming your mind is about creating your unique story and living consciously aligned with your true self, not merely fitting into someone else’s narrative.
