Why can't we use napkins and paper towels to clean or wipe our jewelry?
When it comes to maintaining the shine and beauty of your jewelry, choosing the right cleaning materials is crucial. From my own experience, I used to grab whatever was handy—napkins or paper towels—to wipe my necklaces and rings, thinking it was a quick and easy fix. But over time, I noticed tiny scratches and dullness developing on the surfaces of my favorite pieces. The problem lies in the material composition of napkins and paper towels. As explained in the polishing cloth video, napkins are made from wood pulp fibers which act like very fine sandpaper. Using these on your jewelry essentially wears down the surface bit by bit. Also, napkins easily disintegrate when wet, leaving lint and small white fibers stuck to your jewelry, often making them look dirtier after cleaning. Paper towels, especially those with a crochet texture, have an even harsher abrasive quality. While they might seem thicker or more durable, this roughness increases the risk of permanent scratches. Over time, these scratches can accumulate, dulling the shine and potentially lowering the value of your jewelry. On the other hand, polishing cloths are specially designed with materials that gently clean without scratching. They often contain microfibers or are impregnated with compounds that safely remove dirt and oils while preserving the metal or gemstone finish. If you don’t have a polishing cloth, a soft microfiber cloth used for eyeglasses or electronics can work as a temporary alternative. Avoid any rough fabrics or paper-based products to keep your jewelry looking pristine. In addition to wiping, regular professional cleaning or ultrasonic cleaners can help maintain your jewelry’s brilliance. But for everyday care, being mindful of what you use to clean and wipe your jewelry makes a big difference. From personal experience, switching to a proper polishing cloth has greatly extended the life and sparkle of my pieces, and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to keep their jewelry looking its best.
