China speeds up testing of J-36 tailless stealth fighter prototype unusually fast design change
Footage and video released online show that China continues to advance testing of the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation's new generation of stealth aircraft, the J-36. The latter made its first public appearance on December 26, 2024.
What is worth noting is not just the speed of the project, but the changes found in each prototype, the air intake, the exhaust system, and the up-down wheel assembly, reflecting that the development team was experimenting with multiple approaches to the final design, not just reusing the original plane.
The J-36 has a tailless shape, uses a mix of wings, fuselage and three engines, a structure that has not been used on active combat aircraft before. Its unusually large size also leads analysts to argue that it is an air fighter, a long-range attack aircraft, or perhaps a "regional bomber" with air combat capabilities.
If China maintains the speed of development, some analysts estimate that the J-36 may be approaching the stage of production around 2030, however, China has not yet officially announced its name, role, performance, or scheduled for entry into service.
The "4th prototype" has not been independently confirmed by the Chinese authorities or major sources. The more unequivocal evidence confirms that an improved version of the prototype began flying in October 2025, with further prototypes reported late in the same year. It should therefore be called "an aircraft believed to be a new prototype."
Is the prototype change so fast that China is accelerating to close the gap with the United States, or is it preparing to build a new type of fighter that the world does not yet have a name for?
