☀️ large solar farms in drylands of China, such as the Talatan Desert, Qinghai Province and Kubuqi in Inner Mongolia, are showing that solar panels may be more beneficial than electricity generation.
Solar panels block some of the light, reducing wind force and water evaporation. As rainwater and water wash the panels flow into the ground, these can create a small environment more conducive to the growth of desert plants. 🌱
A study that surveyed 40 solar power plants in the desert region of northern China found that the area, which let nature recover by itself, had an average increase of 74% in crop cover, but the highest average level was still only about 10%, while areas that supplemented crop cultivation and sand control measures yielded better results.
For Kubuqi, the 2026 research estimates that solar farms have the potential to reduce evaporation, increase water seepage, maintain benthic and carbon sequestration, but the construction period may interfere with ecosystems and reduce some water content as well.
Therefore, solar farms do not automatically turn deserts green; the results depend on area type, water content, how they are built, cropping, and long-term administration.
