Boyan Slat, a Dutch inventor, chose to leave the university to found The Ocean Cleanup, a nonprofit that develops plastic waste coping technology on both rivers and oceans.
♻️ at sea, the organization uses a large float system to collect garbage from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which has about 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic and a total mass of about 100,000 tons. This area is not a hard "garbage island," but a plastic soup scattered in the water.
🚤 In the river, Interceptor boats are used to trap waste before it flows out to sea, because stopping waste from the source reduces the amount of new plastic entering the ocean directly.
Most recently, The Ocean Cleanup states that more than 10 million kilograms of waste can be removed from aquatic ecosystems. However, waste collection technology alone may not be enough if the world does not reduce single-use plastics, improve waste management, and control pollution from source along the way.
