So I did a quick day trip to San Diego with the fam and decided to try tacos from a Mexican Fighters restaurant (Canelo) El Pastor Del Rica quality in food was good! However when it came to portion size or quantity of menu items, I was not impressed.
Then we took a quick trip to Balboa Park and walked around exploring the museums and amphitheaters that they have while also grabbing a quick snack from there!
I love San Diego and it’s definitely one of those places you have to visit when you get the chance!

Walking in, you immediately get this vibrant, authentic feel. The wooden slatted walls, adorned with framed photos of legendary fighters, create an atmosphere that's both energetic and uniquely San Diegan. It's not just about grabbing a bite; it's about soaking in the whole experience, making it a true local find. I was super excited to try their tacos, especially with that bold sign promising so much. The food quality was genuinely good – think fresh, flavorful ingredients and well-marinated meats, particularly their al pastor, which was a highlight. However, I do have to echo my initial thought on the portion sizes; if you're someone who loves a massive plate, you might find yourself wanting a bit more. But for a quick, incredibly tasty stop that offers a slice of local culture, it absolutely hits the spot. It's a place that embodies that 'no taco, no life' motto with passion, even if you need a few more to truly fill up!
But San Diego life isn't just about amazing tacos, right? After fueling up, our day trip truly blossomed at Balboa Park. This place is an absolute gem, and if you live by a 'no tacos, no life' motto, you might just add 'no Balboa Park, no life' to that list! Seriously, it's sprawling, incredibly beautiful, and packed with so much to see and do. We spent hours just wandering. The reflecting pool, with the grand, Spanish Colonial Revival architecture of the museum buildings reflecting in the water, is absolutely breathtaking – it’s a must-see for photos! And seeing the iconic California Tower peeking majestically through archways? It’s postcard-perfect and truly iconic.
What makes Balboa Park so special is its incredible diversity. There are so many world-class museums, from the San Diego Museum of Art to the Fleet Science Center and the Natural History Museum. You could easily spend an entire day just exploring a couple of them. Beyond the museums, the gardens are equally stunning. The Botanical Building and Lily Pond are iconic, and the Japanese Friendship Garden offers a serene escape. We grabbed a quick snack from one of the vendors, just sitting on a bench, soaking in the lively atmosphere, watching street performers and artists add to the vibrant energy. It’s a place where history, culture, and nature beautifully intertwine.
For anyone planning a San Diego day trip, I highly recommend balancing your culinary adventures with some cultural exploration. Start with a unique food spot like El Pastor Del Rica to get that authentic local flavor and snap a pic of the 'NO TACOS NO LIFE' sign – it's a great conversation starter! Then, dedicate a good chunk of your afternoon to Balboa Park. My top tip: wear comfortable shoes because you'll want to explore every nook and cranny, and don't try to see it all in one go. Pick a few spots that intrigue you most and savor them. Whether you're into art, history, science, or just want a beautiful green space to relax and enjoy the San Diego sunshine, Balboa Park truly offers something for everyone. It’s a perfect way to experience the diverse and rich 'life' that San Diego has to offer, proving that while tacos are undeniably amazing, a full San Diego experience is even better and makes for an unforgettable day!
