One eye-opening realization I've had is that self-care doesn't mean escaping motherhood—it means supporting yourself from within it. It’s about recognizing that for you to give your best to your children and family, your own well-being has to come first. From personal experience, I found that adjusting expectations and openly asking for help made a huge difference. Communicating honestly with my spouse about how I felt, what I needed, and not being afraid to admit when I was overwhelmed helped break the cycle of self-sabotage. It’s so important for mothers to stop asking for permission from themselves to take care of their mental and emotional health, and instead give themselves that permission freely. Self-care can take many forms, from quick moments of rest like a quiet break listening to music or watching a favorite show, to taking yourself out on a date to reconnect with who you were before motherhood. These small actions are essential for reigniting your passions and joy. Remember, being a mom doesn’t mean losing your identity—you’re evolving, not erasing yourself. Also, it’s critical to consider the example we set for our children in how we take care of ourselves. They watch and learn what self-care looks like, which influences their future habits and emotional health. By showing that prioritizing your needs is not selfish but necessary, you’re teaching them a valuable life skill. Ultimately, motherhood is a season of growth. Five years into this journey, I can say that embracing the mantra "first things first, I’m first" isn’t just a catchy phrase—it's a vital mindset shift. This approach helps reduce burnout and fosters a more joyful, patient, and fulfilling experience for both mom and family. If you're feeling burnt out or resentful, remind yourself: you’re not broken. You’re human, and it’s okay to set boundaries and ask for support. Taking care of yourself is the best gift you can give to your loved ones and yourself.
