What I fed my 2 Autistic Toddlers?

Saint Charles
2025/6/21 Edited to

... Read moreAs a parent of autistic toddlers, I totally get the breakfast struggle! We've all been there – spending time making a meal, only for it to be completely rejected. My own journey with finding 'meals for autistic kids' has been a rollercoaster, especially when it comes to dinner ideas after a long day. It’s not just about what we put on the plate, but how it’s presented and the whole mealtime environment. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the power of routine and predictability. For my kids, knowing what to expect can make a huge difference. We try to have dinner around the same time each evening, and I often serve a 'safe' food (something I know they usually eat) alongside a new or less familiar item. This reduces pressure and makes the meal feel less overwhelming. Sensory considerations are always at the forefront of my mind. My toddlers might reject a meal based on its texture, smell, or even if different foods touch each other. That’s why divided plates, just like the ones I used for the Mickey Mouse shaped pancakes, are an absolute lifesaver! They help keep the scrambled eggs separate from the bacon, or the blueberries from the fruit strips. I've noticed some kids prefer soft textures like yogurt or mashed sweet potatoes, while others gravitate towards crunchy items like chicken nuggets or raw veggie sticks. When it comes to 'dinner ideas for autistic child,' I have a few go-to options that often work well or can be easily adapted: Deconstructed Meals: Taco nights are a hit because everyone can build their own. I’ll lay out ground beef or chicken, shredded cheese, mild salsa, and rice. My kids can choose exactly what they want, giving them a sense of control. Pasta Power: Simple pasta with butter and Parmesan cheese, or a very mild tomato sauce, is usually a winner. Sometimes I'll sneak in finely grated vegetables like zucchini or carrots into the sauce if I'm feeling ambitious! Breakfast for Dinner: Who says pancakes are just for breakfast? Sometimes we embrace 'breakfast for dinner' with fluffy round pancakes, crispy bacon, and a side of scrambled eggs. It's comfort food and often a familiar, low-stress meal. Sheet Pan Dinners: These are fantastic for busy evenings. I’ll bake chicken tenders or fish sticks (often preferred for their crunchy texture) alongside roasted potato wedges or green beans. Everything cooks on one pan, minimizing fuss. Introducing new foods requires immense patience. I often try the 'one bite rule' or simply present a new food on the plate without any expectation for them to eat it. Sometimes it takes multiple exposures over weeks or even months before they even touch it, let alone try a bite. Even if they didn't eat the pancakes or bacon I spent time making, I try to celebrate the small victories – maybe they ate the blueberries, the wild berry fruit strip, or the yogurt pouch. Any bite counts as progress! Every day is a learning curve, and what works one day might not work the next. But by staying tuned into their needs, being flexible, and keeping a positive attitude, we can make meal times a little less stressful for everyone involved.
