Making Reading Fun For Toddlers

My daughter loves books and loves to read. This week, I read, “Chicka Chicka, Boom Boom” and “Brown Bear, Brown Bear. What Do You See?” My goal was to make these books fun, interactive, and of course, budget-friendly. Out of construction paper, I made the sun, palm tree, and coconuts and cut out 26 squares. Then, I made the letters with my Cricut and glued them onto the squares. When reading the book, I had her place the letters on the tree. My learning objective was to introduce letters and to keep her engaged and moving. Similarly, I tried the same concept with the Brown Bear book. This is my daughter’s favorite. Since it's her favorite, I read this book to her A LOT. Therefore, I noticed she would say the next animal before I turned the page, due to repetition and memory. So I thought it was a good idea to introduce the term Sequence of Events. My intention in doing this wasn't to force her to understand the concept; instead, it was to introduce the word and help her understand the skill she was mastering. I printed out the animal cards on a website called “Teachers Pay Teachers” (for free) and glued them onto construction paper according to the animal's color in the story. I wish I could have printed out the animal cards in color, but my printer isn't working. Unfortunately, I had to print it at my apartment complex office. During the story, I had her place the animals in order as I referenced the other animals each time she added a new one to the chart. She loved it and had so much fun. If you have any advice, tips, or tricks, please share below or let’s collaborate.

... Read moreReading is a foundational skill that can be nurtured in various ways. Engaging toddlers with interactive reading activities not only fosters a love for books but also supports early literacy development. Incorporating playful elements, such as creating physical representations of story characters or themes, keeps young readers excited and involved. For instance, the use of construction paper to make visual aids is a fantastic method to help toddlers associate letters with sounds. As they place letters on a palm tree or animals on a chart, they are learning crucial literacy concepts in a memorable way. Furthermore, repeating familiar books is beneficial because it enhances memory and recognition skills. Introducing terms like 'sequence of events' during reading time allows children to comprehend story structure naturally, reinforcing their cognitive development. Utilizing resources like 'Teachers Pay Teachers' provides access to various educational materials that can be used alongside reading. Activities that encourage children to interact physically with the story, such as sequencing animal cards, can also build comprehension and critical thinking skills. Finally, parents and educators are encouraged to share tips and ideas with each other. Collaborative learning in the community can lead to discovering new strategies that make reading even more enjoyable for young children.
