Chapter 1: The Forgotten Promise

Lily had always loved her grandmother, Mei, more than anyone else in the world. Mei was warm, wise, and kind-hearted, always ready with a story or a laugh. Her hands, worn but gentle, could comfort Lily like nothing else. But things had changed. Mei, once a welcome figure in their home, was no longer there.

Lily didn’t understand why her grandmother wasn’t around as much as she used to be. Her mother had married a new man, Mr. Harper, who dressed in fine suits and spoke in a way that made him seem like he was above everyone else. Though Mr. Harper gave Lily’s family a new house, a car, and nice clothes, he didn’t seem to bring happiness. In fact, he seemed to take it away, especially from Mei.

One evening, Lily overheard a conversation that would change her life. Mr. Harper’s voice was cold and sharp, “She doesn’t belong here. She embarrasses us. Either she goes, or I do.” Her mother didn’t argue. She didn’t defend Mei. Instead, she silently accepted her husband’s wishes, breaking her promise to always protect her mother.

And so, Mei was cast out, leaving Lily with an ache in her heart and a longing she couldn’t understand.

Chapter 2: The Secret Meetings

Lily missed her grandmother deeply. Days turned into weeks, and yet Mei didn’t return. Every night, Lily would look out her window, hoping she’d see Mei walking up the path, ready to tell her another bedtime story. But Mei never came.

One day, Lily decided to take matters into her own hands. She asked her mother about Mei, but her mother simply shook her head and said, “She’s gone, Lily. It’s better this way.” Not satisfied with this answer, Lily made a plan. She would find her grandmother on her own.

After school one afternoon, Lily sneaked away to the town park. She remembered her grandmother saying once, “If you ever need me, look for me under the big oak tree in the park.” It was there, on an old bench under the oak’s sprawling branches, that Lily found Mei, wrapped in a worn shawl with a look of quiet sorrow in her eyes.

“Grandma!” Lily called out, running to her. Mei’s face lit up as she held her granddaughter tightly, her embrace filled with all the warmth and love that the world had denied her.

From that day on, Lily began visiting her grandmother in secret. They shared laughter, stories, and songs, their connection unwavering despite the circumstances that kept them apart.

Chapter 3: Stories of Strength

The visits became Lily’s secret escape, a safe haven where she could be with the one person who truly understood her. Mei would tell Lily stories from her own childhood—stories of bravery, kindness, and the strength to face hardship with grace.

One afternoon, Mei shared a story that stayed with Lily long after. She spoke of a young woman who was cast out from her village but never lost her spirit. “She believed that as long as love lived in her heart, she could face anything,” Mei said softly. “And she did. She found her way back, even stronger than before.”

Lily looked up at her grandmother with admiration. “Was that woman you, Grandma?” she asked, though in her heart, she already knew the answer.

Mei simply smiled and patted Lily’s hand. “One day, you’ll understand that strength is not about where you live, but about who you are inside.”
