ADHD + PMS = CHAOS

For years I thought my PMS was just extreme… turns out it’s the ADHD.

And every ADHD friend I’ve talked to says theirs is insane too.

It’s not “just PMS.” It’s brain fog, mood swings, high emotions, and executive dysfunction on steroids.

You’re not lazy. You’re not crazy. You’re not broken. ADHD + hormones are just a brutal combo. They are tag teaming against us.

Anyone else feel like PMS hits 10x harder with ADHD?

... Read moreLiving with both ADHD and PMS means facing a unique and often overwhelming set of challenges that go far beyond typical premenstrual symptoms. The combined effects of ADHD and hormonal fluctuations can amplify emotional instability, cognitive difficulties, and physical discomfort, creating what many describe as a state of chaos every month. ADHD can magnify the common PMS symptoms such as mood swings and irritability, making emotions feel more intense and unpredictable. This heightened emotional response is linked to the executive dysfunction characteristic of ADHD, which can impair your ability to manage stress, organize tasks, and maintain concentration during your cycle. Brain fog, a common PMS symptom, becomes even more pronounced, sometimes making it difficult to think clearly or make decisions. Additionally, hormonal changes influence neurotransmitter activity in the brain, particularly dopamine and serotonin—both crucial in ADHD management and mood regulation. The hormonal shifts during the menstrual cycle can disrupt these neurotransmitters further, leading to increased feelings of fatigue, anxiety, and overwhelm. Understanding this interaction is key to managing symptoms effectively. Strategies such as prioritizing rest, creating a nurturing environment with comforting routines—like having an 'emergency chocolate stash'—and practicing grace toward yourself can be vital in coping with these amplified symptoms. It's important to recognize that struggling through this is not a personal failing; rather, it’s a biological reality for many with ADHD. Open discussions about the intersection of ADHD and PMS also help reduce stigma and provide support. Joining communities like those tagged with #adhdinwomen and #neurodivergent can offer a sense of belonging and shared experience. Plus, consulting healthcare professionals familiar with neurodiversity and hormonal health can lead to personalized approaches to treatment and symptom management. If you feel like PMS hits 10x harder because of your ADHD, you’re certainly not imagining it. Recognizing that this is a real and valid experience can be empowering. With awareness, support, and tailored coping tools, it’s possible to navigate this difficult period with greater ease and self-compassion.
