This was my first time going out to eat without my parents. It was literally last year and I have so much social anxiety so I have never done it before. However my two friends in the video made me feel comfortable and didn’t make fun of me for all of my questions.
How did you feel going by yourself out to eat for the first time?
It's totally normal to feel nervous about eating out, especially for the first time or by yourself! I remember how anxious I was, just like in my story. That feeling of everyone watching you, or worrying about what to do with your hands – it can be overwhelming. But trust me, it gets easier, and there are so many ways to make the experience more comfortable and even enjoyable. If you're trying to conquer that fear of eating alone, a great first step is to choose the right place. Maybe start with a casual cafe or a place with communal tables where you don't feel as exposed. Going during off-peak hours can also reduce the pressure. I found that having my friends there made a huge difference, offering that initial comfort and distraction. When you're ready to venture out solo, think about bringing a book, headphones, or even a small notebook to jot down thoughts. It gives you a focal point and makes you feel less self-conscious, like you have a purpose beyond just 'being there alone.' One thing that really helps me manage my anxiety during the meal is to focus on the sensory experience. Really savor every bite, notice the flavors, the aromas, and the textures. It's a mindful way to shift your attention from your inner anxious thoughts to the present moment. Don't rush! Take your time, enjoy the pace, and observe the surroundings if you feel comfortable. Remember, most people in restaurants are focused on their own meals and conversations, not on scrutinizing you. They're probably too busy enjoying their own food! Starting small is key. Maybe just go for a coffee or a quick lunch initially, rather than a full dinner. Or try a place with counter service where you can quickly order and move. Each successful outing, no matter how small, builds your confidence. You'll gradually realize that eating alone can actually be a really empowering and peaceful act of self-care. It's a chance to truly tune into yourself, enjoy a meal exactly how you like it, and observe the world around you without distraction or the need to make conversation. It offers a unique sense of independence and a moment of quiet reflection. While my friends were my initial comfort and a fantastic crutch, I'm slowly learning to enjoy my own company in public too, and it's a journey worth taking. Another common concern is what to do before or after the meal. Plan a little activity! Maybe you're heading to a bookstore afterward, or you just finished a workout. Giving yourself a reason to be out can sometimes help alleviate the feeling of being 'just there.' If you're really struggling, remember that it's okay to start by taking your food to go and enjoying it in a park or a more private setting. The goal is progress, not perfection.
