PART 3 OF PROJECT (FINAL)

2025/1/4 Edited to

... Read moreBuilding on my previous thoughts, this final part of my 'Fandom's Weirdness with Rhaego' project really pushes us to look beyond the surface of popular Game of Thrones discussions. It's not just about what happened in Westeros, but how we, as fans, interpret and often selectively remember events and character motivations. One of the most striking observations, as noted by the insightful analyses I've encountered, is the stark double standard applied to female characters like Daenerys Targaryen compared to their male counterparts. We often hear about 'Targaryen madness' as an inherent flaw, almost a genetic inevitability for Dany. Yet, when you compare the scrutiny she faces to, say, Jon Snow, Euron Greyjoy, or even Ramsey Bolton, the discourse feels profoundly different. Their dark deeds or questionable choices are often framed as strategic, tragic, or even 'badass,' while Daenerys's arc is frequently reduced to a pre-destined descent into 'madness,' often ignoring the immense trauma and betrayals she endured, including the devastating loss of baby Rhaego. This selective application of the 'madness' trope ties directly into the broader discussions of fandom hypocrisy. Consider Daemon Targaryen: a character who commits objectively heinous acts, including targeting children for revenge in the Dance of the Dragons. Yet, he often receives a significant pass or even glorification from fans, with context conveniently removed to protect certain 'Green' faction biases. This stands in stark contrast to characters like Mirri Maz Duur, who, in her own deeply flawed way, sought revenge for the destruction of her village and people. Her actions, while horrific, are rarely given the same nuanced consideration as Daemon's; she's simply painted as a villain, with little exploration of the systemic violence she faced. The argument of 'Nature over nurture' regarding Rhaego's potential for evil, often used to justify Mirri's actions, also warrants deeper examination. It’s a convenient narrative that absolves characters of responsibility by attributing outcomes to inherent traits rather than situational factors and personal choices. Furthermore, the critique of Martin's portrayal of the Dothraki, linking it to potentially racist beliefs, highlights how real-world biases can inadvertently seep into and influence our consumption and interpretation of fantasy. It forces us to ask tough questions about representation and the often unexamined tropes embedded in our favorite stories. Ultimately, when we look at how fandom treats characters like Cersei Lannister, Rhaenyra Targaryen, or Catelyn Stark—women who also took violent revenge or made extreme choices to protect their children—we see a pattern. There's an undeniable tendency to judge Daenerys more harshly, to dissect her every flaw with a magnifying glass while offering more leniency to male figures. This ongoing 'project' has made me realize that understanding the 'weirdness' of fandom isn't just about fictional characters; it's about reflecting on our own biases and the complex ways we engage with powerful narratives.
