7 Common Triggers for colon cancer

7 Common triggers for colon cancer. Type 2 diabetes can increase your risk of colon cancer.

💪Get my free ebook for help with diabetes and blood sugar control from my profile or comment colon and I'll DM it to you.

Alcohol use: alcohol use has been associated with colorectal cancer but the risk increases with the more alcohol you drink.

Type 2 diabetes: studies show that type 2 diabetics are at higher risk for colorectal cancer and they may also have other colon cancer risks like obesity and sedentary lifestyle.

Inflammatory bowel disease: having a condition that causes chronic colon inflammation like Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis is associated with increased colon cancer risk.

History of abnormal colonoscopy: colon polyps which are abnormal growths in the colon that can become cancerous, are removed when you have a colonoscopy. Depending on how many polyps there were or how large the polyps are, you are followed for any recurrence, usually with a repeat colonoscopy within 3-5 years.

Family history: a family history of colon cancer, especially if the family member was diagnosed before the age of 50 can increase your risk.

... Read moreColon cancer is a significant health concern, and understanding its risk factors is crucial for prevention. One of the primary triggers is alcohol consumption, which has been linked to a higher risk of colorectal cancer. Regular intake increases this risk, making moderation essential for those who consume alcohol. Type 2 diabetes is another critical factor; individuals with diabetes often have overlapping risk factors such as obesity and a sedentary lifestyle. The relationship between diabetes and colon cancer highlights the importance of managing blood sugar levels and maintaining an active lifestyle. Chronic conditions like inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, can also predispose individuals to colon cancer. These conditions lead to persistent inflammation in the intestines, which may contribute to cancer development over time. A history of abnormal colonoscopy findings can indicate the presence of colon polyps, which are precursors to cancer. Regular screenings and follow-ups are essential for those with a history of such findings to monitor any changes. Family history plays a significant role as well; having a close relative diagnosed with colon cancer, particularly at a young age, increases your risk. Genetic factors can influence the likelihood of developing this type of cancer, making it important to discuss family medical history with healthcare providers. Lastly, lifestyle choices such as smoking and dietary habits, like insufficient fiber intake, can further elevate the risk. As part of a proactive approach, adopting a healthier diet and avoiding tobacco are necessary steps in reducing overall colon cancer risk. Awareness of these factors and regular health check-ups can significantly impact outcomes. For more strategies on managing risk factors, consider resources like diabetes management guides.
