The HDR iPhone feature is ruining your photos!

Ever taken a photo and noticed it suddenly looks darker in the preview? That’s thanks to your iPhone’s HDR feature which is designed to balance highlights and shadows for more “realistic” results. But sometimes it backfires, especially when you liked how the lighting looked before the edit. Only certain iPhone models let you manually disable HDR (iphone 12 and older). Others don’t have the option, unfortunately. The only real workaround is to edit your photos afterward, but at least now you know why it happens.

... Read moreWhen I first noticed my photos looked darker right after taking them, I was so confused! It turns out that iPhone’s HDR (High Dynamic Range) automatically tries to capture more detail by adjusting the balance of light and dark areas. On newer iPhones like the iPhone 13 and later, you can’t turn off Smart HDR manually, which can be frustrating if you prefer the original brightness. If you have an older iPhone model, like the iPhone 12 or earlier, you can disable HDR by going to Settings > Camera and toggling off Smart HDR. But if you don’t have that option, don’t worry! You can always adjust your photos after the fact in the Photos app or any photo editing app. Increasing brightness, contrast, and fine-tuning details can help restore the original look you liked before HDR adjustments. Personally, I found that understanding how Smart HDR works helped me better control my photo editing. Instead of feeling stuck with dark photos, I learned to make quick edits that bring my photos back to life. It’s a handy trick for anyone who loves iPhone photography but doesn’t always love what HDR does to your pictures!
