The absolute most crucial step here is drying! I usually spread them out on a clean towel on a gray mat or even a paper towel and let them air dry completely for several hours, or even overnight, before putting them back on. You don't want any moisture trapped inside! Another popular method, especially for cleaning around the delicate switches and the PCB, involves isopropyl alcohol. While my initial deep clean uses dish soap for general grime, isopropyl alcohol (usually 70% or 90%) is fantastic because it evaporates quickly, making it safer for electronics. I often use it on a cotton swab or a soft brush, like an old toothbrush I've designated for cleaning, to meticulously clean around the switch stems and the plate after the keycaps are removed. This is super effective for dissolving sticky residues or oils that the dish soap might not fully tackle, or for areas where you really want to avoid excess moisture. Just remember to use it sparingly on the cotton swab – damp, not dripping! Speaking of brushes, for getting into those tiny crevices under the keycaps and between the switches, an old, soft-bristled toothbrush can be your best friend. It’s often much more effective than a larger brush for dislodging trapped dust and debris that accumulates when you turn your keyboard upside down. I find it perfect for cleaning the switch housings themselves, especially if you have a hot-swappable mechanical keyboard and want to get really thorough. And for regular maintenance, preventing a deep clean from becoming a monumental task is key. I try to make it a habit to turn my keyboard upside down once a week and give it a good shake to dislodge loose crumbs and dust. A quick wipe-down of the keycaps with a slightly damp cloth (again, not soaking!) can also prevent grime buildup.
