Feeling not a safe guide
Many people struggle with maintaining their spiritual faith because they expect their feelings to always align with their beliefs. However, feelings can fluctuate due to circumstances, mood, or external influences, making them unreliable as a foundation for faith. From my personal experience, I’ve learned that spiritual growth largely depends on trusting God’s promises even when emotions are uncertain or negative. For example, the verse Habakkuk 2:4 says, "the just shall live by his faith," which reminds us that faith is an ongoing commitment rather than a momentary feeling. When I encountered challenges, I realized that relying solely on how I felt could lead me astray. Instead, I chose to anchor my trust in the promises found in scripture. Living by faith means accepting that God is trustworthy and will fulfill what He has said, regardless of our emotional state. This can feel difficult at times since human emotions often seek immediate reassurance. But true faith builds over time as we repeatedly choose to believe and obey God’s word, even when feelings of doubt arise. This approach has helped me avoid the spiritual ups and downs caused by emotional swings. It encourages a stable relationship with God based on His unchanging nature, not on how we perceive Him daily. Additionally, faith accompanied by love purifies and strengthens the soul, helping us to grow spiritually and live in obedience. The key takeaway is that faith is not a spontaneous reaction but a deliberate decision to trust God’s promises. This trust cultivates peace, hope, and resilience, allowing us to navigate life’s uncertainties confidently. So instead of asking "How do I feel about God today?", it’s more fruitful to ask "Do I believe God is faithful to His promises, no matter what?" This shift in perspective has transformed my spiritual journey into a more peaceful and purposeful path.
