When Your Nervous System Feels Unsafe

When your nervous system is dysregulated,

your body feels like it’s in constant danger — even when it isn’t.

These grounding steps will help you return to your center,

so you can move forward with calm instead of chaos.

... Read moreHave you ever felt that unsettling sensation of feeling unsafe in your body, even when logically, you know you're okay? It's a truly disorienting experience, almost like your internal alarm system is stuck on high alert. For a long time, that was me when my nervous system was completely dysregulated. It's not just in your head; there are very real reasons why your nervous system might be stuck in overdrive, constantly signaling danger. Often, this feeling stems from a combination of factors. Past trauma or conditioning can leave a lasting imprint on our nervous system, teaching it to perceive threats where none exist. Chronic stress and overworking, a common plight in our modern world, also play a huge role, pushing our bodies into a perpetual state of 'fight or flight.' I've learned that ignoring my needs or boundaries, constantly putting others first, and seeking external validation for safety only compounds the problem. Your body truly can't think its way into calm; you must show your body it's safe to soften. So, what happens when the nervous system constantly feels unsafe? Beyond the immediate discomfort, prolonged dysregulation can impact everything from your sleep quality and digestion to your ability to focus and maintain healthy relationships. It can feel like your nervous system is failing you, leaving you perpetually exhausted and anxious. But the good news is, you can cultivate nervous system safety and bring yourself back to a state of calm. While the grounding steps like the 5-4-3-2-1 technique, breathwork, or splashing cold water on your face are incredibly effective for immediate relief, building long-term inner safety requires consistent practice and a deeper understanding. One thing that truly helped me was incorporating more vagus nerve stimulation throughout my day, beyond just the cold water splash. Humming, gargling vigorously, or even gentle neck stretches can help reset the vagus nerve, which is crucial for moving from a stressed state to a relaxed one. It’s about creating tiny moments of calm that add up. Moreover, creating emotional safety for yourself is paramount. This means speaking to yourself with reassurance, just like a kind friend would. "I am here for me. I will protect me" is an affirmation I've used countless times. It's about honoring small boundaries – saying no to an extra commitment, allowing yourself a few minutes of quiet, or taking a break when your body cues you. Journaling about what triggered that unsafe feeling also offers incredible insight, allowing you to process emotions rather than letting them fester. Slowly but surely, you become the person who calms your nervous system, building a sanctuary within yourself. The more you practice safety in your body, the easier it becomes to stay calm and grounded in your life.

Why Overthinking Feels So Loud
Overthinking isn’t a sign that you’re broken or indecisive. It’s often a sign your system is trying to regain control. When the body feels unsettled, the mind works overtime to compensate. That’s why logic alone doesn’t stop the spiral. Regulation creates clarity — not the other way around.
