Let's talk about utensils #dementiadisruptor

2/28 Edited to

... Read moreNavigating mealtimes with a loved one who has dementia can be challenging, especially when it comes to utensil use. From personal experience, I've found that selecting the right utensils can make a significant difference in maintaining dignity and independence at the table. One effective approach is to choose utensils with ergonomic designs—larger handles or built-in grips can help those with reduced hand strength or tremors manage eating more comfortably. I've used adaptive utensils with bendable handles that align with the natural wrist position, which reduces strain and frustration. Color contrast is another valuable aid. For example, a utensil with a bright, contrasting color against the plate helps the individual visually focus and improves coordination. I recommend plates and bowls that contrast in color to the utensils to further enhance this visual cue. Safety is paramount; avoid utensils that are sharp or heavy. Plastic-coated or lightweight metal utensils can prevent injuries. Additionally, smaller spoon or fork sizes may help control bite portions and reduce choking risks. In promoting independence, I've noticed that allowing individuals to try feeding themselves, even if messy, boosts confidence and engagement. Using utensils that facilitate easy grip and control encourages self-feeding longer into the progression of dementia. Finally, patience and encouragement during mealtime are essential. If needed, assist gently while respecting the person’s autonomy. Combining these utensil considerations with a calm and positive atmosphere can transform mealtimes from a stressful event into an opportunity for connection and comfort.
