I thought Thor was a good guy no ?

When I first encountered Thor in God of War Ragnarök, I, like many, asked myself: “Is Thor a good guy?” Coming from comics and other adaptations, it was a real shock to see him portrayed in such a brutal, complex light. He's far from the benevolent protector we often imagine, and his actions in the game really challenge that perception. My journey through the game made me realize that his character is deeply rooted in vengeance and loyalty to his own family, which tragically puts him at odds with Kratos. From the moment Thor confronts Kratos, his dialogue, which the game thoughtfully highlights, immediately sets the tone. He's not just a big, angry god; he’s driven by a profound sense of loss and justice, as he sees it. When he mentions "blood payments" and taking a piece for "what you took from my family," it hit me hard. This isn't just about a clash of titans; it's personal. Kratos killed his sons, Magni and Modi, during the events of the previous game, and for Thor, that’s an unforgivable offense that demands retribution. His loyalty to Odin, despite the Allfather's manipulative nature, also plays a huge role in his character. Thor is Odin's enforcer, arguably his most effective and dangerous weapon. He's been conditioned by his father for generations, and his worldview is shaped by the Aesir's dominance and their perceived right to rule. This upbringing, combined with the loss of his children, paints a picture of a god who isn't inherently evil, but rather profoundly broken and misguided by grief and paternal influence. Furthermore, the overarching narrative of "SURVIVING FIMBULWINTER" and the impending Ragnarök puts immense pressure on all the characters, including Thor. He’s caught in the web of prophecy and his father’s schemes. While Kratos and Atreus are trying to avert or understand Ragnarök, Thor is often a tool in Odin's plan to control it, or at least survive it on their terms. This constant tension contributes to his volatile nature and the difficult choices he makes throughout the story. So, is he a good guy? In the traditional sense, definitely not. He's violent, short-tempered, and commits acts that are undeniably cruel. However, understanding his motivations – his love for his family, his grief over his sons, and his twisted loyalty to Odin – makes him one of the most compelling and tragic figures in the God of War universe. It’s a powerful reminder that in this world, heroes and villains are rarely black and white, and personal vendettas can drive even gods to extreme and often heartbreaking lengths. Experiencing his journey really made me reflect on how easily grief can turn into destruction, and how difficult it is to break cycles of violence.
