Hair Mistakes that cause hair loss

Hair Mistakes That Cause Hair Loss

By Dr. Anna Chacon, FAAD

Hair thinning? Your daily routine might be to blame.

As a board-certified dermatologist, I see this all the time common hair habits that quietly contribute to hair loss.

Here are some of the biggest mistakes:

• Tight ponytails, braids, slick buns, and extensions → Can cause traction alopecia (hair loss from chronic tension). Over time, this can become permanent.

• Excessive heat styling → Flat irons and blow dryers weaken the hair shaft, leading to breakage that mimics thinning.

• Over-bleaching or chemical processing → Damages the structural proteins in the hair, making strands fragile and prone to shedding.

• Ignoring scalp health → Product buildup and untreated inflammation can interfere with healthy hair growth.

• Crash dieting or low protein intake → Can trigger telogen effluvium, a stress-related shedding that appears months later.

The good news: many of these causes are preventable. Gentle styling, reducing tension and heat, maintaining proper nutrition, and early evaluation can make a significant difference.

Healthy hair starts with healthy habits.

... Read moreFrom my experience, understanding the root causes of hair loss often helps in making mindful changes that protect your hair's health. One common mistake I personally made was frequently wearing tight ponytails and braids. Over time, I noticed increased hair breakage and thinning around the hairline. This is a classic example of traction alopecia caused by constant tension on the hair follicles, which can become permanent if not addressed early. I also recall the damage my hair endured from excessive heat styling without proper heat protectants. Blow drying and flat ironing daily weakened my hair shafts, leading to split ends and breakage that looked like overall thinning. Reducing the heat frequency and using protective sprays made a significant difference in the hair’s integrity. Chemical treatments, especially bleaching, were another factor that compromised my hair's strength. The harsh chemicals strip away natural proteins, resulting in fragility and shedding. After limiting chemical processing and incorporating deep conditioning treatments, my hair texture and resilience improved. An often-overlooked aspect is scalp health. I found that product buildup and dryness could lead to itching and inflammation, hindering healthy hair growth. Regular gentle scalp exfoliation and using scalp-friendly products helped restore balance. Lastly, nutritional habits play a critical role. After a period of low protein intake due to crash dieting, I experienced significant hair shedding months later—a classic sign of telogen effluvium. Ensuring a balanced diet with adequate protein and key vitamins is essential for hair follicle health. Overall, hair care requires a holistic approach: gentle styling, minimizing tension and heat damage, maintaining scalp cleanliness, and supporting your body with proper nutrition. Early evaluation by a dermatologist can help diagnose underlying issues and provide personalized treatment options. Healthy hair truly starts with healthy habits!
