Speaking from my experience as a psychologist discussing teenager mental health on a live TV program, I’ve seen firsthand how social media creates both opportunities and challenges for youth. Social media platforms can influence teenagers' self-esteem and emotional well-being in complex ways. For example, constant exposure to curated images and peer interactions often leads to feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, or depression. However, these platforms also offer avenues for support, self-expression, and community building when used mindfully. During the TV segment on Htown Live, we highlighted how important it is for parents, educators, and mental health professionals to foster open conversations about screen time and digital behaviors. Encouraging teens to develop critical thinking about online content and to balance online engagement with offline activities can make a significant difference. I recommend practical strategies such as setting realistic social media boundaries, encouraging positive online interactions, and teaching coping skills to manage cyberbullying or negative feedback. Additionally, increasing awareness about mental health resources and promoting resilience are essential steps. Overall, mental health awareness and psychology insights must adapt to the evolving digital landscape. Social media is not inherently harmful, but its unique impact on developing minds must be addressed thoughtfully and proactively. From my TV experience, I’m confident that sharing this knowledge helps build a clearer picture for communities to support teenagers better.
