How I get through my call shifts

Working 24+ hours is NOT easy, but here are some tips that help me get through them: Prepare with comfies ( change of clothes, blanket, makeup remover or something to freshen up), stay hydrated throughout the day and make sure you are eating ( especially healthy snacks to keep you fueled). Not easy but you got this !

... Read moreLet's be real, pulling a 24-hour (or even longer!) call shift is one of the toughest parts of working in medicine. It’s physically and mentally draining, and honestly, just getting through it feels like a marathon. But over time, I've picked up some survival strategies that have made a huge difference for me, helping me maintain a semblance of sanity and even a well-balanced routine. First off, preparation is key. You wouldn't run a marathon without training, right? Same goes for a long shift. Beyond just grabbing a change of clothes and a cozy blanket, think about your mental game. I always pack my favorite comfortable clothes – something I can change into after I shed my scrubs, making the transition feel a bit more relaxing. A small pillow or a soft scarf can also be a game-changer for those rare moments of rest. And don't forget something to freshen up, like makeup remover wipes or a travel-sized skincare routine; feeling clean can do wonders for your morale. Fueling your body properly is non-negotiable. It’s easy to grab whatever is available when you’re exhausted, but trust me, healthy snacks are your best friend. I always prep a variety of options beforehand. Think beyond just a granola bar! Hard-boiled eggs are a protein powerhouse, and a fruit cup provides essential vitamins and a natural sugar boost. If I'm really on top of my game, I'll even make some avocado toast ahead of time – it sounds fancy, but it’s quick to assemble and keeps me full. Carrying a reusable water bottle is also a must. I try to make it a habit to fill it up frequently and take sips throughout the shift, even when I think I don't have time. Dehydration can sneak up on you and make you feel even more tired. During the shift, every little moment counts. If you get a five-minute break, take it! Stretch, walk to a different part of the unit, or just close your eyes. I've found that having a small, engaging activity can help switch off my brain from work mode for a few minutes. Sometimes, I'll bring a small book to read a chapter or two, or listen to a short podcast. It’s not about escaping, but about giving your mind a brief, refreshing pause. Seeing doctors in blue or green scrubs hustle, I know how hard it is to prioritize these moments, but they are crucial for endurance. Now, for an often-overlooked aspect: the end of shift. This is where you really set yourself up for recovery and maintaining that well-balanced workday routine. When that 24-hour call shift finally ends, the first instinct might be to crash or jump straight into personal errands. But a good "end of shift" activity is about transitioning gracefully. For me, that means heading home, getting out of my scrubs, and taking a warm shower. It's a simple ritual, but it physically and mentally washes away the stresses of the long hours. Instead of immediately looking at my phone or tackling chores, I might put on some gentle music or just sit quietly for a bit. This decompression time is vital for processing the day and allowing my brain to wind down. Prioritizing sleep above all else is absolutely critical. I try to create a dark, cool, and quiet environment to ensure I get quality rest, even if it's only for a few hours. If I can, I'll avoid screens for an hour before bed. And finally, don't forget to reconnect with your support system. A quick check-in with family or friends can be grounding, reminding you of the world outside the hospital walls. It might not always be easy, but by implementing these strategies, you can not only survive those demanding 24-hour call shifts but also maintain your well-being and a healthier balance in your life.
