Many times we were so happy with the numbers on the lab paper that we forgot to look at his eyes at home.
As a veterinarian (and a mother), the doctor wants everyone to know the "HHHHMM Scale" or the criteria for measuring the happiness of their chronically ill children. Ask yourself this:
Hurt (pain): Does he still moan or breathe? (Pain control?)
Hunger (eating): Does he still want to eat his favorite?
Hydration (water): Is the body dehydrated until dry?
Hygiene (cleanliness): Does he excrete or have a pressure wound?
Happiness (happiness): Does his tail still wag when he sees our face? Or seep all the time?
Mobility (movement): Can you walk yourself?
More good days than bad: Is a good day more than a bad day?
If most answers are "no."..Maybe it's time we talked to the doctor about "adjusting the treatment plan" or taking Palliative Care seriously.
